Mombasa to Promote 147 Doctors, Hire 64 on Permanent Basis as KMPDU Ends Strike

At least 147 doctors are set for promotions after breakthrough negotiations between the Mombasa County Government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

The breakthrough comes after a strike notice was issued on February 24 by the medics, triggered by long-standing grievances over stalled promotions, delayed statutory deductions and job insecurity for contracted doctors.

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir led negotiations with KMPDU, which culminated in an agreement on Tuesday, March 3, which guarantees immediate and phased promotions across multiple job groups.

Under the deal, 15 doctors in Group M have received promotion letters to Group N, while promotion for other groups will take place in stages.

33 doctors in higher groups will get their promotions from April 1, while an additional 39 doctors will be promoted in July, with further promotions for Groups Q → R (17) and R → S (4) included.

Mombasa County also committed to converting 64 doctors, who are currently on contract, to Permanent and Pensionable status effective June 1, 2026.

Meanwhile, the county also committed to clearing pending statutory deductions in full by September 2026 to address the financial grievances that had fueled the initial strike notice.

In a statement, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah revealed that the deal would include administrative and legal safeguards, with minimal political interference.

“Both parties have agreed that medical personnel and operations shall remain free from political interference,” a statement from KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah said.
