Mombasa: Two Killed As Family Boat Ride Capsizes

The Memon family’s Christmas Day celebrations were cut short when the boat they were sailing on capsized at Mombasa’s Jomo Kenyatta Beach, often known as Pirate’s Beach.

The Nairobi family of 12 lost two relatives, a man and a woman, in the Sunday evening event. According to Mombasa Red Cross Chairperson Mahmoud Noor, one member is still in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Infants aged 3 to 5 months who were with the family at the time of the incident are in stable condition.

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has increased its vacation beach safety awareness campaign in order to educate the public about water safety procedures.

Due to Covid-19 regulatory regulations, beaches along Kenya’s coast have not seen an increase in tourist numbers for the past three years, until this year.

The campaign, organized by the KMA, Coast Professional Lifeguards, Kenya Wildlife Service, and other stakeholders, aims to ensure the safety of holidaymakers visiting the beaches over Christmas and New Year, particularly at the most-visited Jomo Kenyatta Beach, where activities are now available 24 hours a day.
