In order to save the Mountain Bongo from extinction, Kenya has established a Mountain Bongo Sanctuary.
One of Kenya’s most famous animals is the Mountain Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci).
It’s a critically endangered subspecies that only exists in Kenya, as is the country’s largest forest antelope.
The Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary, located in Nanyuki, is Africa’s and the world’s first Mountain Bongo sanctuary, marking a historic milestone in the fight for the animal’s survival, with less than 100 individuals left in the wild.
Najib Balala, the Tourism Cabinet Secretary, was present at the event, and according to his statement, 5 mountain bongos have already been released into the sanctuary.
The Government of Kenya’s Mountain Bongo National Recovery and Action Plan (2019-2023) has a long-term goal of achieving a population of 750 people in Kenya by 2050. The sanctuary’s opening represents a significant step toward achieving this goal.
With habitat loss, hunting, and diseases among the challenges facing mountain Bongos, putting them in a safe haven could be the key to saving them from extinction.
Bongos are the world’s largest forest antelopes, living up to 20 years in the wild.
