Mozambican Capital Restricts Beach Access Amid Crime

The authorities in the Mozambican capital Maputo have said all beaches in the city will be closed between 19:00 and 05:00 local time.

This is in order to combat crime.

Increasing acts of violence including rapes and murder in Maputo, have prompted the measure.

This crimes take place in the beaches especially at night.

Leonel Matsumane, the municipal director of tourism, said for any activity beyond the time must be lawfully permitted.

“A request must be submitted and a team assigned to monitor activities,” said Matsumane.

The Costa do Sol beach will have a dedicated police post for better monitoring of compliance.

Costa do Sol beach is a popular venue for swimming, parties and other social and sporting activities.
