MP Nabwera sues Deputy Governor Savula in defamation row

By Andrew Kariuki

MP Nabii Nabwera has filed a defamation case against Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula, accusing him of making statements he says were false and harmful to his reputation.

In the suit lodged at the High Court, Nabwera alleges that Savula publicly implied that he is HIV positive, claims the legislator insists are entirely untrue and intended to humiliate him in both his personal life and political career.

Court papers state that the remarks were made openly and later circulated, drawing public attention and subjecting Nabwera to stigma, speculation and ridicule.

He says the allegations have caused him psychological distress and risk eroding public confidence in his leadership.

Among the orders sought, Nabwera has asked the court to direct that a HIV test be conducted under proper medical supervision and in full public view, including the presence of independent health professionals and the media.

He argues that the request is aimed at conclusively disproving the claims and restoring his name.

The MP further contends that the dispute raises broader concerns about the misuse of sensitive health issues in political discourse, warning that such allegations deepen stigma and undermine respect for human dignity.

Savula has not yet filed his response to the petition.

The court is expected to give directions on the matter, including timelines for pleadings and whether it will consider the remedies sought by the legislator.
