MPs Call For Remarking Of KCPE Exams, Demand Explanation From CS Machogu

A number of Members of Parliament have expressed concern about irregularities in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) 2023 results.

The MPs, led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly and Marakwet West legislator Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, have revealed plans to summon Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to explain the incompetence in parliament.

“The exam was not fair and credible. How is it possible for students in the same school to score same marks, some got marks for papers they did not take. We, the committee for education will conduct investigations. Those found culpable of mismanaging KCPE must go home,” Toroitich said on Sunday during the Holy Family Kapsowar Catholic Church’s fundraiser.

Melly, the chairperson of the National Assembly Education Committee, argued that the KNEC results were not credible.

“When you see students scoring the same marks, there is a problem. And it has to be either the person who marked the papers, or the exam supervision exercise,” Melly said.

Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Ruto, for his part, has stated that the incident has broken the hearts of many students who had hoped to excel in the exam.

“What was the essence of Machogu fastening the marking process? We are shuttering hopes of young students. Machogu has to be serious,” Ruto said.

The leaders have demanded that the exams be remarked.

Earlier, KNEC admitted to irregularities in the process, stating that it had received appeals regarding some errors in results obtained through the Ministry of Education’s short code 40054.

“It was brought to the attention of KNEC that results for some candidates had misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they were placed at the Kenyan Sign Language,” read the statement from KNEC CEO David Njengere on Saturday.
