Mudavadi declares interest in 2032 presidential race

He emphasized that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is his preferred vehicle for this bid, describing it as a "national vessel" that offers a clearer path to power than smaller regional parties.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2032 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with Western Kenya-based radio stations on 30 January 2026, Mudavadi confirmed his long-term political roadmap after years of speculation.

Mudavadi stated that his current focus is supporting President William Ruto’s re-election in 2027, with the plan to seek the presidency once Ruto completes his two terms in 2032.

He emphasized that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is his preferred vehicle for this bid, describing it as a “national vessel” that offers a clearer path to power than smaller regional parties.

He urged the Western Kenya region to unite under UDA now to secure future bargaining power. He noted that alignment with the ruling party would provide easier access to national support, particularly from the Rift Valley region.

His announcement coincides with similar declarations from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who also expressed interest in the 2032 race, signaling a potential contest for regional leadership within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Mudavadi maintained that his former party, the Amani National Congress (ANC), was legally dissolved into UDA to facilitate this long-term strategy, dismissing recent court rulings that sought to reinstate the party as politically irrelevant.

Mudavadi’s move is seen as a strategic pivot to position himself as the most viable successor to President Ruto, focusing on “relevance over populism” as he builds his national profile.
