Nairobi Police are investigating the brutal murder of a 19-year-old student at Multimedia University, whose body was discovered three days after she was reported missing.
Sylvia Kemunto, a first-year student pursuing Mass Communication, was last heard from on Sunday.
Her mother, concerned after repeated failed attempts to reach her, visited the university and later filed a missing person’s report at Lang’ata Police Station.
Investigations reveal that Kemunto was allegedly strangled by her boyfriend, identified as Philip Mutinda, inside her hostel room.
He is said to have stuffed her body into a suitcase and moved it to his own room. His roommate reported unusual behavior, including seeing him use the suitcase as a pillow before hiding it under the bed.
By the following day, both Mutinda and the suitcase were missing.
On Wednesday, Kemunto’s body was found decomposing inside a water tank at Block E. The discovery sent shockwaves across the campus, prompting heightened security and questioning of several students.
The suspect surrendered to police in Sultan Hamud on Thursday. He is currently in custody as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continue with the probe.
The case has renewed urgent calls for action against rising cases of gender-based violence and femicide across the country.
