Museveni, First Lady Renew National IDs as Uganda Rolls Out Mass Registration Drive

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have renewed their National Identity Cards, marking a significant step in Uganda’s nationwide mass registration and ID renewal campaign aimed at strengthening national identification systems.

The couple underwent the exercise on Tuesday afternoon at the State Lodge in Nakasero, supervised by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), under the leadership of Executive Director Rosemary Kisembo.

The campaign, launched at the end of May, seeks to upgrade IDs initially issued between 2014 and 2015. While those IDs were set to expire, the government granted a one-year extension to allow for a smooth transition to the enhanced biometric versions.

“Today, Maama Janet and I registered to renew our national identification cards in Nakasero. I urge every eligible Ugandan to do the same for improved service delivery,” President Museveni posted on X.

The new identity cards come equipped with advanced biometric features to boost data accuracy, enhance security, and minimize cases of forgery or misuse. They will also be essential for accessing government services, regional travel, and participating in the 2026 general elections.

NIRA has urged Ugandans to register early and avoid last-minute congestion. Those replacing lost cards are required to present a police report during the process.

The 10-month registration campaign follows Uganda’s first-ever digital population census, a key development that is expected to provide updated demographic data and strengthen national planning efforts.

Authorities view the revamped ID system as a cornerstone of Uganda’s national security and socio-economic development.
