Museveni: Iam Not Backing Ruto

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has dispelled rumors that his administration will Deputy President William Ruto in the August General Election.

In an interview published Monday in Uganda’s New Vision newspaper, Museveni stated that the elections are Kenyans’ concerns and that his country does not take sides.

“Elections in Kenya or any other African country are a matter for the people of that country. We never take sides in the internal affairs of other countries. So, we have no side in Kenya elections,” Museveni is quoted.

Ugandans have repeatedly criticized Deputy President William Ruto’s ties with Uganda’s long-serving president, accusing him of interfering in the country’s politics.

Ruto participated in Museveni’s campaign trails in the Kapchorua and Bukwo districts in 2015, which irritated Uganda’s opposition MPs.

Museveni again hosted Ruto at State House in Kampala in 2019, where they had an almost three-hour meeting.

Ruto was invited to the official stone-laying ceremony for a vaccine production factory in Uganda in July 2021 as the principal guest.

He was banned from traveling to Uganda with his team in August 2021 due to a lack of clearance from the Interior Ministry.
