Museveni to Pick NRM Nomination Papers Ahead of 2026 Elections

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is set to pick nomination forms this Saturday as he eyes another term at the helm of both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the country.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday morning, NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi confirmed Museveni’s participation in the party’s upcoming internal elections.

“Like all other candidates, the President and National Chairman of NRM will express interest and personally pick up the nomination forms,” Dr Odoi told reporters. “He will be seeking two positions: Chairperson of the party and presidential flag bearer for the 2026 elections.”

The process of expressing interest and picking nomination forms for all Central Executive Committee (CEC) positions within the NRM will run from 26 June to 1 July. Formal nominations of aspirants will be conducted on 4 July.

Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is expected to face internal and external scrutiny over his bid to extend his nearly four-decade rule. However, he remains a dominant force in Ugandan politics and within the NRM’s top leadership.

The announcement comes as other electoral activities continue across the country. Nominations for Members of Parliament and district chairperson aspirants have entered their second week, taking place at the Electoral Commission offices on Kyadondo Road in Kampala.

Museveni’s continued hold on power has drawn both admiration and criticism, with his supporters citing stability and economic progress, while critics raise concerns over democratic space and political freedoms.
