Presidential aspirant Mwangi Wa Iria caused a scuffle outside the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after his bid to run for President was rejected.
In a video clip obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the Murang’aGovernor, who had appeared at the IEBC offices for clearance on the night of Sunday, May 29, accused the electoral body of favoritism.
The politician argued in his fiery rant that he was being shortchanged after learning that he had only submitted signatures from nine counties, despite the fact that his team had the required signatures from 24 counties.
Wa Iria also claimed foul play when he was returned and rescheduled, despite the fact that he saw a number of other aspirants’ names on the schedule despite the fact that they had been disqualified.
“I was even turned away to rectify one of the forms and told to return the next day but I was adamant I must come back today.
“Even those people who did not qualify have been added on to the schedule and we have seen them being invited in but I was struck off from the schedule,” he stated.
The aspirant also claimed that he had proof that his team met with the IEBC and reviewed his documents before submitting them, and that some rogue officials had dumped some of his documents.
“This is a new Kenya. No elections will be conducted if I do not contest. I brought everything. I brought 24 (forms) then someone told me they were only 9… We even had a forwarding letter and other documents.
“We even have photos of your people going through item per item with our people. They have deliberately removed my name today by throwing them in the toilet. How comes no one has told me anything,” he added.
Many candidates were disqualified during the Presidential candidate clearance process, reducing the list from 55 to barely 20.
