Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Ngusya Nguna has officially ditched the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM-K) for President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Nguna made the move on Thursday, October 09, during a meeting between the president and Lower Eastern leaders at State House in Nairobi. The defection marks a significant political shift in the Ukambani region, long considered a stronghold of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
President Ruto commended the MP for what he described as a courageous and forward-looking decision. “I specifically thank Mwingi West MP Charles Ngusya Nguna for his bold move to join our team to push forward the development agenda in his constituency,” Ruto said.
Nguna, who served his first term in Parliament from 2017 to 2022 under the Democratic Party (DP) ticket before being re-elected on a Wiper ticket, said his decision was driven by the need to fast-track development in Mwingi West.
“Tighten your belts. It’s going to be busy the next two weeks with President William Ruto,” the legislator told his constituents, hinting at a series of upcoming presidential visits and project launches in the area.
Cabinet Secretary for Labour Alfred Mutua welcomed Nguna to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, praising his decision to “abandon the politics of stagnation in favour of progress and development.” Mutua said the move reflected a growing recognition of Ruto’s leadership philosophy of inclusion, empowerment, and growth.
Nguna’s defection comes amid broader political realignments following reports that KANU chairman Gideon Moi has withdrawn from the Baringo senatorial by-election. The party has since announced it will not field a candidate, effectively paving the way for a likely UDA victory in the contest.
