Transit Truck Crashes Into The Expressway

A heavy truck crashed into the new highway a day after it was inaugurated by President Uhuru Kenyatta, causing a traffic jam on both the Nairobi Expressway and the Mombasa Road.

On Monday, August 1, photos shared on social media showed the vehicle overturned near Gateway Mall in the Syokimau area, temporarily blocking one half of the highway.

According to witnesses, the truck was traveling primarily on Mombasa Road when it collided with the barrier separating the two highways before overturning on the Expressway.

However, it was not immediately clear what caused the accident or whether there were any casualties.

President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the highway on Sunday, following a successful three-month trial run coordinated by Moja Expressway.

During the launch, the President praised the project’s ability to disrupt the livelihoods of over six million people employed in the tourism and conferencing industries.

Speeding, according to Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, is a major cause of concern on the highway.

He noted that motorists openly ignored the maximum speed limit of 80km/hr, with some exceeding 140km/hr.

In June, one person was killed and several others were injured in an accident involving a speeding motorist at the Nairobi Expressway Mlolongo Toll Station.
