A shocking incident unfolded outside the Supreme Court building in Nairobi on Tuesday morning when an unidentified man set himself ablaze in an apparent act of desperation.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. along City Hall Way, prompting swift action from security officers stationed at the court premises.
According to a statement from the Judiciary, the man was walking along the pavement when he stopped, placed some documents on the ground, and doused himself with a liquid believed to be petrol. He then ignited himself using a lighter.
Security officers nearby rushed to his aid, extinguishing the flames, though the man sustained burns in the ordeal.
Police officers from the KICC Police Station arrived promptly, and an ambulance from the Nairobi County Government was dispatched to the scene.
The man was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for treatment, accompanied by police who also collected the documents and his burnt clothing as part of their investigation.
Authorities are expected to interrogate the man once he recovers to determine the motive behind his drastic action.
The Judiciary, through its spokesperson Hon. Paul Ndemo, expressed concern over the incident and is investigating whether the man’s actions are linked to a court-related matter.
“We wish the man a speedy recovery,” Ndemo stated, adding that the Judiciary is closely following the developments.
