NAIROBI: MCAs Trample Proposal to Close Bars Bordering Schools

At the same time, members expressed concern that the move would deprive the county of much-needed revenue and that some schools were built after alcoholic establishments were established.

The County Assembly unanimously rejected a proposal to close and relocate alcoholic establishments near educational institutions.

The motion was introduced by Nominated MCA.Nasra Nanda proposed that restaurants located approximately 300 meters from educational institutions be closed and relocated.

The member also informed the house that in order for such businesses to be licensed, the Sub-County Committee must be satisfied that they meet the requirements through the Liquor Licensing Board.

Similarly, she suggested that supermarkets with liquor stores ensure that the area where the alcohol is sold is not accessible to anyone under the age of 18.

Ms Nanda stated that selling liquor near educational institutions could result in school dropouts, poor performance, and risky sexual behavior.

She cited previous NACADA and KIPRA surveys that found alcohol to be the most abused substance, with average users being 11 years old.

As a result, she requested that the executive issue a one-month closure and relocation notice to liquor stores and pubs operating within 300 meters of schools.

Similarly, she requested that the executive send a similar notice to supermarkets to ensure that underage customers do not access the alcohol sections, failing which their licenses will be revoked.

However, the majority of ward representatives opposed the proposal, arguing that there were already laws in place to control the sale of alcohol.

At the same time, members expressed concern that the move would deprive the county of much-needed revenue and that some schools were built after alcoholic establishments were established.
