That involves the placement of a long, thin tube into a vein or artery and is typically performed without general anaesthetic.

It also been reported that he has had two stents fitted to his heart, and that his severe chest complaints came after he returned from from a routine bike ride on Sunday.

Koeman’s current condition is stable and he is due to return home on Monday.

A statement from the Dutch football association, the KNVB, read: “Ronald Koeman was hospitalised on Sunday evening after chest complaints.

“The 57-year-old national team coach of the Dutch national team has undergone a successful cardiac catheterisation and will return home tomorrow.

“We wish Ronald a lot of strength and improvement.”
“Heart problems are not new for the Koemans. Ronald’s dad died seven years ago when he had a heart attack at his home.

“And the Koeman family has had its faire share of health problems with Ronald’s wife having breast cancer nine years ago.”

Well wishes flooded in from Koeman’s former clubs and players after the news was confirmed on Sunday evening, with Everton posting a message of support for the former Barcelona defender.
