A horrific accident unfolded at a Sri Lankan race on Sunday, leaving 7 people dead and 20 injured.

A race car veered off the track and slammed into a crowd of spectators and race officials during a competition in Diyatalawa, a town known for its tea plantations.

The incident occurred roughly 180 kilometres east of Colombo, the nation’s capital.

Cause of the Crash Under Investigation

Authorities are still piecing together what caused the race car to lose control and careen into the crowd. Thousands of spectators were present when the tragedy struck.

According to police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa, one of the cars veered off the track, striking spectators and officials.

According to Thalduwa, seven people were killed, four of whom were officials, and another 20 were being treated in hospitals.

He stated that three of the injured were in critical condition.

Thalduwa said police have launched an investigation into the crash, which occurred on the 17th of 24 scheduled events. The race was then suspended.
