New Governor: Benson Mutura swears alliegence to NMS

Benson Mutura has been sworn in as acting Governor, in the notable presence of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) boss, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Badi. – By Gerald Gekara.

The former Makadara Member of Parliament will serve as the acting Nairobi Governor for 60 days (2 Months) pending election of a new Governor.

He was sworn at by Judge Jairus Ngaah, at the Nairobi City County headquarters.

Moments after his swearing in ceremony, Governor Mutura signed the contentious 35 Billion budget that had been a source of enemity between the governor and the NMS.

Mutura added that the county government will work alongside the NMS to fulfil projects set aside for Nairobi.

“You have elected me to various positions in the city and I have never failed you. This will not be the first time… We will work alongside the NMS.” he said.

Untouchable’s exit

Mutura will take over functions after the Senate upheld the decision by Nairobi County Assembly to impeach former governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko was accused of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, violation of national laws, and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka ruled in favour of the MCAs, after Senators voted in favour of the county assembly effectively affirming the decision to remove him from office.
