Kitui county has been the trading centre of all Ukambani politics. The county is home to Wiper Leader, former VP Kalonzo Musyoka.
It is called home by the first Kenyan African Chief Justice Maluki Kitili Mwendwa.
It is the county that produced William Mutunga, Kenya’s first Chief Justice after the promulgation of the 2010 Constituency.
Charity Ngilu is the boss, as the Governor. She has found run rings around Wiper Leader for control of politics and resources in Kitui county.
Her stint as the governor has made Kitui a devolution masterpiece up Uhuru Kenyatta’s sleeve, for being a successful manufacturing hub.
Now she must beat David Musila to retain her seat. Musila, who once fell out with Kalonzo, sought refuge in Wiper so as to contest.
According to Ngilu’s men, Wiper is sponsoring Dr Malombe, the former Governor and neighbour to divide her votes to their advantage.
They say Mueke, the former Nairobi City Deputy Governor and Kenya’s ambassador to Uganda Kiema Kilonzo are all weapons to stop Ngilu.
On the other side, Kalonzo hardliners accuse Ngilu of driving the Raila agenda. And they will stop at nothing to remove her from office.
Kitui politics will be messy, come 2022.
