Ng’ondi Wins First Round in Nairobi Speaker Race

Kennedy Okeyo Ng’ondi of Azimio won the first round of the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker’s race on Thursday, September 29.

The Clerk of the Nairobi County Assembly, Edward Gichana, declared Ng’ondi the winner after determining that he had garnered the simple majority of the votes cast in the first round.

Ng’ondi received 71 votes, while Hassan Robow received 52. However, Ng’ondi did not get two-thirds of the votes cast, indicating that a second round is likely.

“Those two candidates will proceed for a second round since none of them attained the threshold of 82 votes,” he said.

The voting process started immediately after the 123 MCAs took their oath of office.

The MCAs are supposed to be 124 but the Utawala ward is yet to conduct elections.

The Nairobi County Assembly experienced minor disruption as the Speaker election began.

The disruption was caused by a clash between Kenya Kwanza-aligned County Assembly members and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance members.
