Ngweno: Peerless, Fearless Scribe Who Undressed The State

Hilary Ngweno is the undisputed father of weekly news analysis. His Weekly Review was a must read for the political and business class in Kenya in the 80’s. – By Henry Kimoli

Every Friday, his red or maroon magazine peeled off the press to the waiting hands of middle class. His was not your idea of a news magazine. But the story behind the story.

His indepth analysis on the accident that claimed former CJ Maluki Kitili Mwendwa in 1985 gave clues of who may have wanted Kitili out of the way.

Same as the gruesome murder of Horace Owiti, former Gem MP in a maize plantation.

The murder of former President Mwai Kibaki father, Githinji Kibaki in Othaya was also well analysed by Ngweno.
He was an incisive peerless and fearless journalist who stopped at nothing to unravel the truth.

When it become untenable to public the weekly review due to interests, he blamed the economy.

Suffice however is to say that he was among the pioneer chairman of Kenya Revenue Authority(KRA).

His paper was the breeding ground for budding journalists and later day analysts such as Kwendo Opanga, Macharia Gaitho, Jaindi Kisero and the late Phillip Ochieng among others.
