Nigeria Charges 76 Protesters, Including 30 Minors, with Treason Following August Protests

Nigerian authorities have charged 76 individuals, including 30 minors, with treason and inciting a military coup after their involvement in deadly protests that erupted in August over the country’s dire economic conditions.

Court documents revealed the charges on Friday, raising alarm among human rights advocates.

The protests, which took place in Abuja, Lagos, and various cities, were sparked by escalating inflation and widespread hardship affecting everyday Nigerians.

President Bola Tinubu remains steadfast in his commitment to pursue economic reforms, arguing they are essential for the country’s survival.

Tragically, at least 13 lives were lost in violent clashes with security forces during the demonstrations, according to Amnesty International. Many minors have reportedly been detained since August, having participated in the protests against worsening insecurity and economic deprivation.

The activists are currently out on bail, with their case set to be heard in January, as lawyers and rights groups continue to rally for justice.
