Nigeria Fired Up After Twitter’s Decision To Set Up Headquarters In Ghana

Twitter’s founder, Jack Dorsey, revealed on Monday that the company’s African headquarters would be located in Ghana.

“Twitter is now present on the continent,” Dorsey said in a tweet announcing the hires on Monday.

Ghana was chosen as the company’s first African location because of its respect for free speech and online freedoms, according to Twitter.

While this information was not included in the company’s announcement, Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo said in a tweet that the country will be the site of Twitter’s headquarters on the continent.

He said, “The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is EXCELLENT news. This is the start of a beautiful partnership between Twitter and Ghana, which is critical for the development of Ghana’s hugely important tech sector.”

The announcement elicited a flurry of reactions from Nigerian Twitter users, who are surprised that Nigeria, which prides itself on being Africa’s Giant, has been left out of such a significant technological advancement.
