The first blood collection center in Nairobi Metropolitan Area has inaugurated by Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Mohamed Badi and Nairobi County Acting Governor Ann Kananu.
A collaboration between LifeBank and the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service enabled the establishment of the Smart Bank at Mama Lucy Hospital.
“Smartbank Blood Banking is key. Having a steady reliable blood supply is critical towards addressing national disasters, saving lives,” he said.
Mohamed Badi said in a statement that NMS is committed to establishing more blood collection centers in collaboration with the KNBTS and other like-minded stakeholders in order to increase blood sustainability, a model that will be devolved to the counties.
According to CS Aman, the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service used to receive about 450 pints of blood every day, but that number has fallen by 70 to 80 percent as a result of the Covid-19.
He said during World Blood Donor Day that the reduction in donations put a burden on the country’s blood bank.
