Mexico Elects First Woman Chief Justice

Norma Lucia Pina has been elected as the first woman chief justice of Mexico’s Supreme Court.

Lucia Pina was elected on Monday amid controversy over plagiarism claims made against a rival candidate.

The constitutional law expert, who is 63 years old, was excited about the chance to “crack what felt like an unattainable glass ceiling.”

Pina received the support of six out of the eleven Supreme Court justices because she has championed the right to an abortion and promised to combat gender-based violence.

Accusations that Supreme Court judge Yasmin Esquivel, another candidate for the position, falsified her graduation thesis in 1987 cast doubt on the election to succeed Arturo Zaldivar.
