North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui held talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing on Sunday, marking her second visit to the Chinese capital in less than a month, both countries’ state media reported.
According to China’s foreign ministry, Wang told Choe that Beijing is ready to “strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in international and regional affairs.”
He also briefed her on China’s domestic situation and urged deeper exchanges on governance between the two Communist Party-led nations.
North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said Choe conveyed a message from leader Kim Jong Un, stressing that the relationship between Pyongyang and Beijing was “unchanging” and should develop in line with shifting global dynamics.
She noted that during the early September military parade in Beijing, where Kim stood alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two leaders set principles to guide future bilateral relations.
KCNA further reported that Kim pledged Pyongyang’s continued support for China in safeguarding its sovereignty. Analysts say Kim is seeking to break his international isolation and bolster backing for his country’s nuclear arsenal through closer ties with Beijing and Moscow.
The meeting came as attention turns to the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea on October 31–November 1, which Xi is expected to attend.
Seoul also anticipates a possible visit by U.S. President Donald Trump for the gathering, though Washington has yet to confirm his participation.
