North Macedonia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara

North Macedonia has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for resolving the long-standing dispute over Western Sahara, according to a joint statement signed Monday by the two nations’ foreign ministers.

The declaration followed a meeting in Skopje between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and North Macedonia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Timčo Mucunski.

In the joint statement, North Macedonia “considers the Autonomy Plan, put forward by the Kingdom of Morocco in 2007, as the only basis for the settlement of this dispute,” reaffirming its alignment with Morocco’s position and with international efforts to resolve the issue peacefully.

Mucunski emphasized his country’s longstanding support for the UN-led political process, calling for a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution” in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2756 (October 2024). The resolution highlights the essential role of the parties involved and encourages a compromise-based approach.

Both nations also reiterated their backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Western Sahara and pledged continued commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.

This renewed support from North Macedonia aligns with growing international momentum in favor of Morocco’s autonomy proposal, an initiative promoted under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and embraced by a growing number of countries as a credible and realistic path to resolving the Sahara issue.
