Nzioka Waita, Machakos County’s foremost technocrat is under pressure to secure Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua.
Nzioka, the Chief of Staff in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office, is credited with crafting and implementing flagship projects as the founder and director of the Presidential Delivery Unit.
Key infrastructure projects such as the Kibwezi Kitui Road, the Machakos-Kalama project, Machakos Mua to Kangundo were completed under his watch.
Waita was the first African Corporate and Legal services Director at Safaricom. He oversaw its listing at the NSE among other complex undertakings.
He comes from Mwanyani village, Machakos County.
He is the son of Raphael Mwangangi Waita, a US-trained technocrat and oil executive who led the Africanisation of the petroleum industry in Kenya.
The senior Waita was an entrepreneur in the bakery and gas stations operations.
Other Aspirants
Mutua, who came under siege after his wife dropped him for a love binge with a clueless musician, will finish his second term in 2022.
‘Cobra squad’ as he is commonly referred, was the first Governor of Machakos and secured his second term in 2017 by controversially defeating CAS Wavinya Ndeti.
Ndeti is a confidant of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and is expected to vie for the Gubernatorial seat.
She is a former Kathiani MP and comes from the powerful Ndeti family originally from Mitaboni.
Ndeti is a cousin to Machakos Town MP and DP Ruto ally Dr. Victor Munyaka and also a close relative of Mavoko MP Patrick Makau.
Others in the race to succeed Mutua are Treasury PS Dr. Julius Muia, Engineer Maliti, Machakos County Speaker Florence Mwangangi, and former Deputy Governor Kiala.
Mutua Katuku, former Mwala Mp is also said to be in the race but his political fortunes are dwindling rapidly.
