Odegaard Penalty Seals Arsenal Win Over Newcastle in Singapore Thriller

Martin Odegaard’s late penalty handed Arsenal a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United in a lively pre-season friendly in Singapore, extending their winning run on the Asia tour.

Before kick-off, Arsenal fans were treated to the unveiling of new £63.5m signing Viktor Gyokeres, who watched from the sidelines after completing his move from Sporting CP. The Swede was not involved in the matchday squad, but his arrival adds to a wave of summer investment from the Gunners.

It was Newcastle who struck first through new signing Anthony Elanga, whose mishit effort from Sandro Tonali’s cutback looped past a diving David Raya just six minutes in.

Despite missing Alexander Isak, amid swirling transfer rumours, Newcastle tested Arsenal’s defence early, with Raya saving efforts from Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Arsenal responded with two quickfire goals in the first half. Mikel Merino, snapping into a high press, slotted home after a slick backheel from Kai Havertz.

Seconds later, Leandro Trossard’s quick free-kick sent Havertz down the left, and his cross forced an own goal from Newcastle youngster Alex Murphy.

Newcastle clawed back level after the break when Jacob Murphy’s low drive crept through traffic into the bottom corner. But Arsenal had the final say.

Fifteen-year-old Max Dowman, a 60th-minute substitute for Bukayo Saka, made a bold impression.

The teenager’s darting run into the box drew a foul from Joelinton, setting up Odegaard to blast home the winning penalty in the 86th minute.

Dowman’s lively cameo was a bright spot for Mikel Arteta, with the youngster completing two dribbles, winning six of eight duels, and hitting the target with both of his shots.

With additional appearances from summer recruits Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga, Arsenal’s preparations for the 2025-26 campaign look to be gaining momentum.
