A police officer was arrested on Monday, January 14, 2025, for allegedly soliciting a bribe and assaulting a colleague in a dramatic incident at Globe Roundabout, Nairobi.
The officer, identified as Inspector Guyo Dida, the Deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Mavindini Police Station, is now in custody as investigations into the matter continue.
The incident occurred at around 10:00 AM when Najma Ali Magongo, a motorist driving a Toyota Axio, was stopped by the officer, who was in full police uniform.
Inspector Dida accused her of obstructing traffic and entered her car through the passenger door, directing her to drive to the police station. Along the way, he allegedly demanded a Ksh 15,000 bribe to secure her release.
A concerned passerby who witnessed the suspicious behavior alerted the Duty Officer at Central Police Station, Inspector Ambrose Kivuva. The Duty Officer intercepted the vehicle along a slip road, where the situation quickly escalated.
Upon being confronted, Inspector Dida reportedly became aggressive, accusing the Duty Officer of interfering with his work.
He resisted arrest, slapping Inspector Kivuva twice and causing injuries to his face and chest. In the scuffle, Dida also tore part of Kivuva’s police uniform.
With assistance from other officers and members of the public, the suspect was subdued and taken to Central Police Station.
The injured Duty Officer was rushed to Bliss Hospital, where he was treated and discharged in stable condition.
Authorities have confirmed that Inspector Dida had self-deployed to perform traffic duties at Globe Roundabout at the time of the incident.
The case has sparked public outrage, with many calling for strict disciplinary measures against the officer.
Police have launched further investigations, and Inspector Dida is expected to face charges of corruption, assault, and misconduct.
