Omtatah Calls for Ruto’s Resignation, Warns Against Ethnic Politics

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has called for the immediate resignation of President William Ruto, accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of violating the Constitution and failing to govern effectively.

Speaking during a press address on Thursday, Omtatah said the presidency, which should serve as a unifying symbol, had instead become a platform for divisive rhetoric.

He criticised recent remarks by President Ruto claiming tribal victimhood, warning that such sentiments risk reviving dangerous ethnic mobilization narratives.

“There is no constitutional guarantee that the President must stay in office until 2027,” Omtatah stated. “If he has failed to lead, he should step aside and allow Kenyans to elect a new president.”

The senator expressed alarm over what he termed as calculated attempts to isolate the Mt Kenya region. He urged Kenyans from all communities to reject tribal slogans such as “mtu wetu”, “one against 42”, and “we are being finished”, noting that these phrases had historically been used to divide the nation.

“It is a great insult to suggest that the youth who have taken to the streets are driven by tribal conspiracies,” he said. “This movement is inclusive and constitutional.”

Omtatah also dismissed opposition leader Raila Odinga’s recent call for a national dialogue, arguing that what Kenya needs is not elite negotiation, but accountability and fidelity to the rule of law.

In a strong show of support for the ongoing Gen Z-led protests, Omtatah lauded the youth for demanding good governance, transparency, and justice, urging political leaders not to co-opt or mischaracterize the movement for their own interests.

“All Kenyans, regardless of generation or background, must boldly defend the Constitution and reject ethnic politics once and for all,” he concluded.
