Police have arrested one suspect and recovered a homemade pistol following a dramatic robbery incident along CITAM Church Road in Jamhuri, Nairobi.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the suspect was part of a two-man gang operating on a motorcycle that had allegedly launched a robbery spree targeting unsuspecting members of the public in the busy area.
The incident occurred on a section of CITAM Church Road usually frequented by traders, motorists, worshippers and pedestrians, causing panic as the suspects reportedly attacked members of the public before attempting to flee.
“Acting with speed and coordination, officers on patrol in the area immediately responded to the distress calls. As the suspects attempted to flee the scene, they fired several rounds in an attempt to intimidate both pursuing officers and members of the public,” said NPS.
During the pursuit, the pillion passenger was eventually cornered and arrested, while the motorcycle rider managed to escape, prompting an ongoing manhunt by security agencies.
Police said officers recovered a homemade pistol from the arrested suspect. They also recovered one spent cartridge and a bullet believed to have been discharged during the incident.
The suspect narrowly escaped mob justice after angry members of the public bayed for his blood before officers restored order and secured the exhibits linked to the robbery attempt.
