The stampede at the Likoni crossing channel in which a child is still missing has increased the pressure for the construction of a footbridge. – By Enock Mukoma.
Already, 22 people are admitted at the Coast General Hospital. According to authorities, 16 of them were women trying to board a ferry after long queues developed following the collision between MV Safari and MV Kwale.
A spot check by Uzalendo established that a number of the injured had been discharged. However, many fear that a COVID-19 outbreak could be witnessed, following the stampede.
The stampede has agitated the need for a permanent solution to the ferry crisis in Mombasa counties.
Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) is constructing a footbridge at Liwatoni and Mweza Creek, near Mtongwe. The works are being undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation(CRBC).
According to KeNHA, the footbridge works will take approximately 6 months from June 2020. It will be opened officially by President Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2020.
