The Government will have to plant 10million trees in Kitui County to arrest flash flooding in Tana River County.
According to weather experts the periodic flooding water in Garissa, Tana River and parts of Malindi originates from Kitui due to deforestation.
During colonial times, Mutitu Museve, Kamala, Mutinguni and other mountainous areas of Kitui were forested.
The storm water that caused washouts Bura area on Easter Sunday is from Kitui county.
The flood waters meets the road embankment, which is barrier to its free flow leading to rise in water levels on the upstream side.
“To reduce, mitigate and arrest the flooding, a serious afforestation exercise needs to be considered in the Kitui area ” a top Kenya National Highways Authority(KeNHA) engineer said.
Residents are using an alternative route to access Hola, following the floods.
Hola – waldena – Chifiri- Twambui- Endau- Mwitika – Kitui road, which is yet to be tarmacked, but passable throughout the year.
