Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has denied claims that the United Opposition side has already agreed on who will be their flagbearer in the 2027 General Elections.
Speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, Natembeya, who described this as a ‘cold fact’, said that no one should declare him/herself as the opposition flag bearer.
The statement by Natembeya comes hours after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua asserted that he will be the opposition’s flagbearer during the next elections.
According to Natembeya, for one to be selected as the flag bearer, the opposition team will scrutinise the number of people he/she has attracted and his/her resource capacity to run for the presidency in the next general elections.
“We must agree as the opposition, and no one should beat his chest claiming that he is the flag bearer, and I’m saying this because they are just cold facts,” Natemebaya said.
“For us to choose a flag bearer, we will start by checking the number of people you will have brought to us and the resources you have, which will be used to determine,” he added.
Until then, according to Natembeya, the opposition will remain united and focused in opposing President William Ruto’s negative agendas and architecting a solid strategy to dethrone him during the coming polls.
“The aims of everyone who is in the opposition are removing the president from his seat, not because we don’t love him, but because he is yet to fulfil the promises he made to Kenyans, because most of his programmes are adding to poverty in the country,” Natembeya stated.
Speaking during a church service on Sunday, September 14, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said that he will prove wrong a section of leaders who are doubting his capacity to go head-on with President William Ruto in the next elections.
Gachagua, who dismissed claims that his impeachment makes him unqualified to vie for the country’s top seat, said that he is determined to be on the ballot, and once he clinches, he will make it his mission to streamline key sectors such as healthcare, housing, and education during his first days in office.
“Why does Rigathi Gachagua want to be President? If Kenyans elect me as President, if God wishes, I want to do only one thing; that is, to restore the Kenyan state and make sure we restore our health system so that when you go to the hospital, there is medicine,” Gachagua stated.
He added, “I am a candidate to be president of the Republic of Kenya. I am qualified, and I have support. I am looking for more support, and I will be on the ballot as a candidate for President.”
