A GoFundMe organised in honour of June Onkundi, a Kenyan worker who was killed while working as a nurse in Durham City in North Carolina, United States, has so far raised $14,540 (KES 1,742,482) from 239 donations.
The fundraiser has been organized to raise $100,000 (KES 12M) for Onkundi’s family.
June Onkundi was stabbed to death on Tuesday while performing her responsibilities at a mental health care center.
According to family members, Onkundi was working at a Freedom House Recovery Center clinic in Durham when she was fatally stabbed by a patient.
The suspect, James Gomes, 47, of Durham, was found at the scene and detained the following day, according to police.
According to a US publication, Independent Tribune, an arrest warrant shows that Gomes is accused of first-degree murder and is presently being held without bond.
More than two dozen friends and family members met at Onkundi’s Raleigh home Wednesday evening to mourn her.
According to family members, Onkundi was scheduled to attend a doctoral program at Duke in January 2023 to further her education.
Onkundi worked at WakeMed since 2018. She was a nurse in the 1C Clinical Evaluation Area, which has nurses who treat mental health patients, according to the hospital.
According to the GoFundMe page, Onkundi was described as a mentor, wife, and mother who was dedicated to her craft.
She also had a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing.
