Oxford Dictionary Includes Nyama Choma in 2021 Review

The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (OALD) has recognized Nyama Choma, among other local names, as an English phrase.

Nyama Choma is one of 53 words from local dialects that have been added to the Dictionary.

The phrase, defined as meat cooked over an open fire, can now be used in official English situations, according to the dictionary.

Kayamba, on the other hand, has been characterized as a “flat musical instrument that you shake to make noise,” while Maasai is now an official English term for “a member of an ethnic group living in Tanzania and Kenya.”

Majimbo is now defined as “a system of administration in a country with multiple minor states, each of which has some power,” while Zeze, a Swahili word, is now defined as “a musical instrument with one or two strings.”

The new words have been introduced to the dictionary to keep pupils engaged, according to Oxford University Press East Africa Regional Director John Mwazembam.

The products will include not just language assistance such as comparisons, sentences, and other linguistic strategies, but also extra-linguistic aids such as comparisons, sentences, and other linguistic techniques.

Over 2,000 new words have been added to the OALD vocabulary, including phrases like mansplaining.
