Several people feared dead in Narok-Mai Mahiu road crash

At least seven people have been killed in two separate road accidents in Narok.

One accident occurred in the Maltauro area near Duka Moja on the Narok-Mai Mahiu road at about 10 am today.

The accident occurred when the driver of a lorry descending the Nairagie-Enkare escarpment lost control of the vehicle, colliding with multiple vehicles, including a bus and private cars.

According to a police report, the fatalities occurred following two separate crashes at the same spot involving six vehicles and a motorcycle.

The first crash happened when the tyre of a trailer heading towards Mai Mahiu burst resulting in it crashing with a Premio car, a bus and a matatu. Three of the matatu passengers succumbed.

Shortly after, another trailer from the same direction arrived at the scene at high speed, colliding with a Prado whose two occupants died instantly and one died later at the hospital.

The trailer also knocked down a motorcycle killing two pillion passengers. All the deceased and the injured have been transported to the Narok County Referral Hospital. The number of injured is yet to be confirmed.

Police recover drugs as 78 teens arrested at a Kisumu house party

Police arrested 78 teenagers on Saturday, December 21, for allegedly smoking marijuana at a house party in Kisumu’s Mountain View estate, which had over 100 youths in attendance.

Kisumu Central Sub County Commander Peter Mulai confirmed the arrests, stating that the 68 boys and 10 girls, all minors aged 18 and below, were smoking cannabis when officers arrived at the scene.

“We found the teenagers sitting in groups, smoking bhang in a house, the owners of which are still unidentified,” Mulai said.

Some of the minors fled the scene by scaling the wall as the others were being arrested. The detained teenagers were taken to the Obung’a police post. Authorities acted on a tip-off from a concerned neighbor who noticed the large number of youths arriving at the house and the loud music coming from the venue.

Further investigation revealed that the party had been organized by one of the teenagers living in the house. “We are informed that the minors received an invitation via Instagram from the party organizer, who had anticipated over 200 attendees,” Mulai explained.

However, the organizer was among more than 30 individuals who managed to escape by jumping over the perimeter wall. Mulai added, “We have started investigating the social media platform used to mobilize the youths and are tracking the whereabouts of the party organizers.”

At the police station, all the minors were reprimanded, and their parents were later contacted to pick them up. A junior officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, shared that many parents were shocked to learn their children had been involved in the party.

“Some parents couldn’t believe their children were smoking bhang. Like their kids, we also gave the parents a lecture before releasing the minors into their care,” the officer said.

Mulai confirmed that only three minors remained at the police station due to their failure to provide contact details for their parents. He urged any parents with missing children to contact the police station.

Additionally, Mulai appealed to parents to closely monitor their children during the festive season. He warned that this period could expose children to harmful activities, such as drug abuse, sexually transmitted infections, or even unwanted pregnancies.

“The festive season brings a lot of influence. This is when some children are introduced to drug abuse, contract STIs, or young girls get pregnant. Let’s stay aware of what our children are doing,” Mulai advised.

Two masons killed, two others injured after perimeter wall collapse in Runda

Two men who were constructing and decorating a wall died after it collapsed on them in Runda, Nairobi.

Two others were injured and rushed to hospital in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses and police said the group had been hired by a private citizen to paint and decorate a perimeter wall on his residence.

As they went on with the mission, it started to rain forcing the masons to seek shelter at a nearby kiosk.

It was as it rained when the wall collapsed trapping the group in the iron sheets made kiosk.

They were rescued and rushed to a hospital in Kiambu where two were pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Police later visited the scene as part of investigations into the December 17 tragedy

The Investigations are ongoing led by the DCI Gigiri, Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said.

He said some statements have been recorded and the bodies are lying at County Referral Hospital Kiambu awaiting postmortem.

The owner of the plot has not been traced to establish whether the collapsed perimeter wall had been constructed to the required standard, police said.

Murang’a Church Members locks, Chases Pastor for blocking Kalonzo from pulpit

There was drama and disarray at PCEA Elim in Kenol, Murang’a County, after the church elders and worshippers locked all entrances to the sanctuary, accusing the reverend of mismanagement and not respecting the leadership.

According to the church members, the reverend has been denying politicians a chance to address the congregants.

Two weeks ago, Reverend Carol Wanyama denied former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and other politicians the pulpit to address the congregation.

Worshippers who had no clue of the happenings attending the 8.00 am english service and 10. 00 am Kikuyu service ready for holy communion were met with shock as nobody was being allowed admission and were forced to worship outside the church.

The agitated church members want Reverend Wanyama transferred to another church, failure to which no service will be conducted until their demands are met.

“Yeye anafaa kushugulika na kutulisha na kiroho, alafu mambo ya development aachie watu waliochaguliwa kufanya hivyo. Sisi tunasema Reverend Carol must go, and there is no debating about that,” Charles Maina, a church member, said.

The reverend opted to attend service at PCEA Waitua Church. She refused to speak to the media, citing the church protocols.

But according to Samuel Nzioki, an elder of the Nguthuru Parish, the decision by the reverend to bar politicians from the pulpit is in line with the church’s policy, which is not to allow politics in church.

“We received information of an incident that occurred, but we have not received further information on the incident, and when information reaches us, we will debate about it and give the way forward. Everything in Nguthuru Parish is going on well, Reverend Carol is busy and working, today she was in PCEA Waitua,” Nzioki said.

“We received information that some politicians visited PCEA Elim some a few weeks ago and they were not given time to talk politics in the church. We can say that we support the minister, the stand of the church is we are not allowing politics in our church,” he added.

Polic arrests 5 suspects selling fake fertilizer, maize, beans in Bungoma and Kakamega

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), has confiscated 124 bales of expired maize and bean seeds along with significant quantities of expired fertilizers in Bungoma County.

The operation was initiated following reports of expired agricultural products circulating in the market, posing a threat to farmers and food security.

Targeting Kanduyi division in Bungoma, law enforcement officers arrested Hillary Wafula and seized the expired seeds.

The raid extended to Kakamega County, where officers arrested John Kiniale, Mercy Merun and Felix Oyath at Harambee Trading Centre.

These suspects led the officers to three residential houses, where about 70 tons of maize, 10 tons of beans, and 50 bags of 50 kg fertilizer were seized.

On inspection, all the goods were confirmed to be expired and had previously been condemned and marked for destruction.

The suspects were taken to Bungoma Police Station along with the confiscated goods for processing as investigations continue to establish how these expired goods infiltrated the market.

Man brutally murders estranged wife of three kids before committing suicide in Limuru

Residents of Kamandura village of Kamirithu in Limuru, Kiambu County are mourning the brutal killing of a 34-year-old mother of three, who was waylaid by her recently separated husband while heading back to her children from a ‘chama’ on Sunday.

In a statement by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect identified as Paul Waweru Waithera is reported to have committed suicide after the incident.

The incident was reported to the police by the village elder, having found the badly mutilated body of the victim sprawled at a cornfield.

Probing the murder, police established that the victim was heading home from the ‘chama’ meeting held at Kamirithu Shopping Centre in the company of another woman, when the husband accosted them while armed with a crude weapon.

“As he grabbed the mother of his children, the other woman managed to escape and informed the village elder. Unfortunately, by the time a search party found the woman, she was dead and cold,” the statement read in part.

The suspect’s body would later be found dangling from the roof of his house, dead.

The bodies have been taken to Tigoni Level IV Hospital mortuary for preservation.

Ministry of Education Clarifies Raising University Entry Grade for 2024 Candidates

The Ministry of Education has dismissed reports alleging that it has raised the university entry grade for the 2024 KCSE candidates.

The Julius Ogamba-led Ministry on Monday, December 23, flagged the reports as fake even as KCSE candidates await their results.

The reports purported that the Ministry of Education had raised the minimum entry from the current grade of C+ (plus) to B- (minus).

This comes even as the Education CS disclosed that the results of the 2024 KCSE examinations will be released in January 2025.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, December 11, Ogamba, however, did not reveal the exact date maintaining that the marking process was ongoing.

“Right now we are ongoing with the marking and once the results are ready we will be able to release them. I will not be able to give you a particular date because we are in the process of doing the marking. You will get the results,” Ogamba remarked.

A total of 965,501 candidates across 10,754 centres in the country sat for the KCSE examinations this year.

Meanwhile, CS Ogamba previously disclosed that any examination malpractice will be dealt with on an individual level.

The CS noted that his Ministry has put in place measures to curb the crime and that going forward, a whole examination centre will not be affected in case of one exam malpractice case.

Ogamba further maintained that if individuals collaborate to do the crime, they will be followed individually for prosecution.

Govt Condemns Gachagua Over Claims of Deliberate Distribution of Illicit Alcohol in Mt Kenya

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has condemned remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing the government of deliberately targeting citizens in the Mt. Kenya region through the distribution of illicit and counterfeit alcohol.

In a statement on Monday, December 23, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo dismissed the claims, labelling them as politically motivated and inflammatory.

“We take great exception that such grave national matters can be trivialized by one individual, on a church podium nonetheless, without empathy for the families that may be struggling with this crisis.

“In every corner of this country the government officials involved in the fight against illicit alcohol include chiefs and their assistants who are part of their communities and it’s inconceivable that they would preside over what Mr. Gachagua accuses them of,” he stated.

Omollo emphasized that the government neither produces, distributes, nor retails alcohol and termed such allegations as mischievous and misconceived.

“While it is clear for every citizen to see that this is a selfish politically motivated inflammatory statement, it is also obvious that the government does not produce, distribute nor retail any alcoholic drinks. Insinuating that any executive can direct the sale of any alcohol, whether poisonous or not is mischievous and misconceived and would amount to illegality,” he added.

Omollo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens from harmful substances and invited Gachagua to present any evidence he might have to the relevant authorities.

“It is therefore in bad faith and disingenuous of Mr. Gachagua to turn around, after serving this country at the highest office, and lay such ludicrous claims on such a sensitive matter that deeply impacts families and lives.

“We welcome Mr. Rigathi Gachagua to make official complaints and present the evidence he may hold to our investigative or enforcement officers if his true intention is to save the lives of Kenyans from the harm of illicit alcohol,” he further said.

Speaking during a church service in Naivasha on Sunday, December 22, Gachagua accused the government of undoing his efforts of fighting illicit alcohol in the Mt. Kenya region.

He claimed that President William Ruto had instructed Omollo to reopen non-compliant alcohol factories and exclusively sell counterfeit alcoholic drinks to the people of the Mt. Kenya region.

“The Interior Security PS was instructed by the President to reopen all those alcohol factories, and they were urged to sell the alcohol exclusively in Mount Kenya. It is not sold in Rift Valley or anywhere else. Yesterday, three people died in Bahati. Since they forced me out of office, the President has ordered all the illicit alcohol that kills people to be brought here to kill our young people,” he claimed.

Gachagua: Ruto Is Allowing Killer Alcohol in Mt Kenya to Reduce Region’s Votes

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again hit out at President William Ruto, this time accusing him of facilitating alcoholism in the Mount Kenya region.

Speaking during a church service in Naivasha, Gachagua claimed that, despite having won the fight against alcohol and drug abuse in the region during his tenure as Deputy President, the President had undone his efforts.

“The Interior Security PS was instructed by the President to reopen all those alcohol factories, and they were urged to sell the alcohol exclusively in Mount Kenya. It is not sold in Rift Valley or anywhere else. Yesterday, three people died in Bahati,” he claimed.

“Since they forced me out of office, the President has ordered all the illicit alcohol that kills people to be brought here to destroy our young people.”

Gachagua also recalled warning the President against reopening the companies when he was in office, but his pleas went unheard.

He suggested that this move was a calculated effort by the President to reduce the voter population in the Mountain region.

“Police and chiefs have been instructed to allow people to continue drinking the deadly alcohol, so the number of registered voters decreases,” he claimed.

“It is immoral; it is unacceptable to target a community for destruction and extinction through the sale of poison to them. It is entirely possible to end the war on alcoholism because I had already achieved it.”

In his fiery speech, the former Deputy President urged the President to visit the Mountain instead of waiting for tempers to calm, and to address the questions they had.

Among the questions he wanted the President to answer was why he considered Kenyans ‘stupid’ for refusing to vaccinate their livestock.

He also pointed out the criticism of the clergy by the President and reminded him that they had held his hand and prayed for him during the campaigns.

“Come and tell these people why you are sending poisonous alcohol to Mount Kenya to kill their children yet they loved you and voted for you,” he added.

“The questions you have to answer are more than 100 but prepare to answer at least those five or six. Come and don’t be afraid of anger because the people are getting angrier because you have now started insulting people.”

Police arrest notorious robbery suspect, recover gun

In a swift operation following a tip-off from concerned locals, detectives from Rachuonyo North arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of drug peddling and illegal possession of a firearm.

In a statement on Sunday, December 22, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, Barnabas Okello, was apprehended at his residence in South Kanyaluo.

Following the suspect’s arrest, DCI said detectives seized a loaded firearm with four rounds of ammunition, several rolls of marijuana, and police gear including balaclavas and camouflage clothing.

The suspect had allegedly been seen with a firearm and was also known to engage in the sale of marijuana.

The arrest was carried out by detectives in collaboration with officers from the Kendubay Police Station, who had set up an ambush at Okello’s home after receiving credible reports.

“We thank the vigilant members of the public who are contributing significantly to the safety and security of their neighbourhoods by sharing credible information, and assure our fellow citizens that we stand on guard 24/7 to ensure that you enjoy your Christmas and New Year holidays bila mushkili,” DCI said.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.
