Police arrest notorious robbery suspect, recover gun

In a swift operation following a tip-off from concerned locals, detectives from Rachuonyo North arrested a 34-year-old man suspected of drug peddling and illegal possession of a firearm.

In a statement on Sunday, December 22, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, Barnabas Okello, was apprehended at his residence in South Kanyaluo.

Following the suspect’s arrest, DCI said detectives seized a loaded firearm with four rounds of ammunition, several rolls of marijuana, and police gear including balaclavas and camouflage clothing.

The suspect had allegedly been seen with a firearm and was also known to engage in the sale of marijuana.

The arrest was carried out by detectives in collaboration with officers from the Kendubay Police Station, who had set up an ambush at Okello’s home after receiving credible reports.

“We thank the vigilant members of the public who are contributing significantly to the safety and security of their neighbourhoods by sharing credible information, and assure our fellow citizens that we stand on guard 24/7 to ensure that you enjoy your Christmas and New Year holidays bila mushkili,” DCI said.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue.

President Ruto: Construction of Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret dual carriageway to start in 2025

President William Ruto has announced plans to begin the construction of a dual carriageway from Nairobi to Nakuru in 2025.

Speaking during a church service at AIC Kipkorgot in Uasin Gishu County on Sunday, December 22, Ruto said after the first phase of the project, the dual carriageway will be extended to reach Malaba.

He disclosed that plans to dual the road were underway but a Public Private Partnership (PPP) the government had with a French company did not go through.

“We had a PPP program between us and a French company but it didn’t work out. We have other alternatives that we are working on as a government; the commitment that I want to give you is that next year we will begin the construction of a dual carriageway from Nairobi to Nakuru and then later we will take it all the way to Malaba.

“We already have a program and we are already in discussion with different companies on how that road is going to be done so that we can ease the congestion and provide more transport capabilities,” Ruto said while addressing the congregation.

The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has been experiencing significant traffic congestion over the past two days between Kimende and Flyover, as well as along the Limuru-Mai Mahiu stretch.

The situation led to travelers spending extended hours on the road, with some even spending the night in their vehicles.

In response to the persistent traffic jams, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced three alternative routes to help alleviate the congestion.

In photos and videos obtained by Uzalendo News, traffic was at a standstill as vehicles overlapped, blocking the oncoming lane and making it inaccessible.

Some motorists and travellers were seen stepping out of their vehicles, leaving them stranded on the road.

The Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway is a critical part of Kenya’s Northern Corridor, facilitating transportation from Mombasa and Nairobi to western counties and neighboring landlocked countries.

17-Year-Old Girl Arrested After Stabbing Her 16-Year-Old Cousin to Death

A family dispute turned fatal in Narok’s Fanaka Estate when a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death during a fight with her cousin on Thursday.

Police reports indicate that the incident began as a heated argument between the two teenage girls, which escalated into a physical altercation.

During the confrontation, the older cousin, aged 17, allegedly stabbed Joyce Wangui Mwangi.

The incident was reported by a member of the public who witnessed the fight.

Police officers arrived at the scene, but the victim had already been rushed to the Narok County Referral Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) from Narok Central documented the scene, and the body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary.

The 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody as Narok Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives carry out further investigations.

KeNHA Announces Temporary Closure of Southern Bypass Sections for Rehabilitation Works

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass to facilitate critical rehabilitation works.

The affected stretch, running from the Ole Sereni Interchange to the Ngong Road Interchange on both carriageways, will remain closed from Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 8:00 pm until Sunday, January 5, 2025, at midnight.

The closure is necessary to rehabilitate the expansion joints on all bridges within this section and reconstruct the concrete pavement of the Virtual Weighbridge.

According to KeNHA, these works are crucial for ensuring the safety and durability of the bypass.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted through alternative routes, including Mombasa Road (A8 Highway), Lang’ata Road, and Ngong Road.

Motorists are urged to familiarize themselves with the diversion routes and to exercise caution while driving around the work areas.

KeNHA has assured the public that traffic police and marshals will be on-site to assist with managing the flow of vehicles and minimizing disruptions.

Motorists are requested to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth transit during the closure period.

The Authority expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and emphasized that the works are part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of Kenya’s road infrastructure.

For further updates, motorists are encouraged to monitor official KeNHA communication channels.

Ruto: Why I Need Uhuru Allies In Cabinet

President William Ruto has vigorously defended his decision to appoint former allies of ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta to key government positions, asserting that the moves are essential for promoting national unity and advancing his administration’s transformative agenda.

Speaking at a church service in Uasin Gishu County, Ruto addressed concerns over his recent cabinet reshuffle, arguing that a diverse government will better address the pressing issues facing Kenyans.

“I broadened the government further by bringing in some new people so that we can promote unity and understanding,” Ruto stated. He emphasized that the appointees will play a pivotal role in executing the government’s ambitions, including creating jobs and improving the quality of life for citizens.

“Our focus is not solely political but geared towards transformation,” he added, signaling his commitment to a government that prioritizes development over political affiliations.

The president’s remarks come hot on the heels of significant changes within his cabinet, which included the appointments of former Health CS Mutahi Kagwe as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Lee Kinyanjui as the cabinet secretary for Trade, and William Kabogo for Information Communication and Technology (ICT).

Other notable reshuffles feature Kipchumba Murkomen as CS for Interior and Coordination, and Salim Mvurya as the new CS for Sports.

President William Ruto has made significant appointments including former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth as the chairperson of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) National Standards Council.

Ruto also appointed Mwangi wa Iria to lead the Public Procurement Regulatory Board, further expanding his cabinet. In another notable move, Noor Yaror Gabow has been designated as the Consular General for the soon-to-be-established consulate in Haiti, signaling Kenya’s growing diplomatic engagements.

Other key appointments announced by Principal Administrative Secretary to the Head of Public Service, Arthur Osiya, include Gerald Nyaoma Arita as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, a position crucial for steering the country’s monetary policy.

In a broader reshuffle within the Executive Office of the President, Ruto further appointed four advisors: Professor Adams G.R. Oloo as an advisor for strategy and communication, Dr. Silvester Okumu Kasuku as a governance advisor, Major (Rtd) Ali Mahat Somane as an advisor on security affairs in the National Security Advisor’s office, and Joe Owaka Ager as the Secretary of Governance.

“These appointments within the Executive Office of the President seek to augment the complement of personnel supporting the Head of State and Government in fulfilling the profound mandate vested in the nation’s foremost office,” the notice stated.

Additionally, Bruno Oguda Obodha has been appointed as the Managing Director of East African Portland Cement Company PLC, while Douglas Murei Kaibos takes the helm as the CEO of the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency.

These nominations arrive shortly after a surprise meeting between Ruto and Kenyatta at the latter’s residence in Ichaweri, sparking speculation about a potential political reconciliation after a tumultuous year marked by division.

Despite the controversy surrounding these appointments, Ruto maintains that his administration has already fulfilled key promises made during his campaign and remains committed to the welfare of all Kenyans.

Kalonzo Musyoka Announces Maandamano Date If IEBC Delay Persists

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has delivered a stark ultimatum to President William Ruto regarding the urgent need for the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking at a wedding in Machakos, Kalonzo declared that if the President fails to appoint new commissioners by March next year, he will instigate nationwide protests that “will not leave anyone standing.”

“By the end of March, if there is no IEBC, I will go for demonstrations,” Kalonzo warned, underlining the criticality of the situation as the commission has been without commissioners for nearly two years.

The political landscape has been tense, with Ruto recently attributing part of the delay to a litigation case filed by the opposition leader himself.

The discontent did not stop there; Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party (Kenya), accused Kalonzo and the Wiper Party of stalling the appointment process after they opposed Muli’s nomination to the commission selection panel.

Muli claimed victory in an internal coalition election, stating he won with 16 votes to Koki Muli’s 7, emphasizing the legitimacy of the process.

Kalonzo, however, remains resolute, insisting that his team has complied with the court’s timelines and that the delays are state-sponsored. “We adhered to the strict timelines of the Court and submitted the name Koki Muli,” he asserted, reinforcing his position.

In a further critique of the current administration, Kalonzo condemned Ruto’s recent decision to include allies of former president Uhuru Kenyatta in his Cabinet, characterizing it as “blood-based” rather than “broad-based.”

He lamented: “It’s not broad-based but bread-based and even blood-based, because young people were killed, and their blood spilled.”

Gachagua Accuses Government of Plot To Suppress Mt Kenya Votes With Illicit Alcohol

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has unleashed a scathing attack on the current administration, claiming that the resurgence of illicit alcohol in Central Kenya is a calculated plan to undermine the region’s youth and sabotage voter turnout.

Speaking at an event in Naivasha on Sunday, Gachagua expressed his deep concern over the return of harmful brews that he claims were eradicated during his tenure in office.

“Since I was removed from office, all the bad alcohol has been reintroduced to the mountain to destroy our people and reduce voter numbers,” Gachagua decried. He accused local chiefs of being complicit, asserting they have received orders to ignore the brewing crisis. “The youth are being targeted,” he added, painting a bleak picture of the social fabric in the region.

Gachagua, who once led campaigns against illicit alcohol, noted that the rise of these brews has worsened both the economic and social climates of Central Kenya. He holds the current government accountable for neglecting the fight against this menace, stating they are failing the constituents who initially voted them into office.

Turning his ire towards President William Ruto, Gachagua condemned the decision to postpone a planned trip to Central Kenya in January, suggesting that the President is deliberately avoiding the region to escape mounting discontent. “He says he will come to the mountain next year, thinking people’s anger will subside. But is the anger going down or rising?” he questioned sharply.

He urged the President to face local residents and address their grievances directly: “If you are afraid of their anger, you will never come.”

Gachagua’s criticisms extend beyond the issue of illicit alcohol. He lamented the government’s handling of economic challenges, zeroing in on controversial policies such as the housing levy and NHIF reforms. “I was kicked out of government because I spoke the truth,” he declared. “This government is founded on lies, and I couldn’t fit in.”

Since his ousting last November, Gachagua has emerged as a vocal critic of the administration, accusing it of abandoning its fundamental promises to the Kenyan people.

Kimani Ichung’wah Calls For Spiritual Cleansing Of Parliament

In a powerful call for unity following the turbulent events of this year, Kimani Ichung’wah, the Majority Leader in the National Assembly, has proposed special prayers to sanctify Parliament and cleanse it of negativity.

Addressing congregants in Muhoroni, Ichung’wah stressed the urgent need for spiritual rejuvenation after a shocking invasion that led to violence in June.

“I will speak to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to discuss how we can collaborate with religious leaders to sanctify the house,” Ichung’wah declared, reflecting on the dire need to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“We pray that such incidents may never happen again in the history of our country,” he added solemnly.

His comments come amidst rising concerns over national healing and unity, with several church leaders reaching out for collaborative prayers.

However, Ichung’wah also criticized the political involvement of some church leaders during the Gen Z-led anti-tax bill protests earlier this year, lamenting their departure from spiritual guidance.

“Many of our church leaders abandoned their duty to guide us in a godly manner,” he stated, urging a return to spiritual responsibilities. He further implored parents to take a more active role in shaping their children’s behavior, reflecting on the chaos exhibited by youth during the protests.

“Parents must set good examples for our children. The words used against leaders and parents were simply unimaginable for those of us who grew up in earlier generations,” Ichung’wah concluded, calling for collective action to restore moral integrity in society.

Heathrow Flights Cancelled As Strong Winds Engulf Parts Of UK

Strong winds are continuing to cause some travel disruption in parts of the UK as millions of people travel ahead of Christmas.

Heathrow said around 100 flights had been cancelled on Sunday and passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling.

The weather has also led to the “widescale cancellation” of ferry services across the Irish Sea and along the Scottish coast, road closures to high-sided vehicles and rail disruption.

Yellow weather warnings for wind are in place until 21:00 GMT for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern and western England.

On Sunday, winds of 50-60mph are predicted, with the Met Office warning of gusts of up to 70mph in exposed coastal and hilly areas – a gust of 82mph was recorded in South Uist on the Western Isles on Saturday.

Saturday also saw disruption, with a number of ferries between Northern Ireland and Scotland cancelled, speed restrictions in place on some trains in Scotland, a “small number of flights” cancelled at Heathrow Airport due to “strong winds and airspace restrictions”, and some road closures in exposed areas.

Check before travel

Travel expert Simon Calder said Sunday’s 100 cancellations at Heathrow were “significant” and a much higher number than you would normally see on a typical Sunday.

He said they were caused by the predicted high wind speeds so the rate of arrivals – normally as many as one every 80 seconds – has to be extended.

Around 80 of the 100 flights cancelled were British Airways, Mr Calder said, and he estimated around 15,000 passengers would be affected in total.

A Heathrow spokesperson said “a small number” of flights had been cancelled “due to strong winds and airspace restrictions”.

The airport advised passengers to check with their airline for the latest information about their flight.

A spokesperson for British Airways said that “adverse weather” and “restrictions” on the number of flights able to take off and land had led to “a small number of cancellations”.

They added: “We’re offering free flight changes for those customers booked on short-haul services who don’t wish to travel this weekend, and we will be offering rebooking and refund options as always to those whose journeys are disrupted as a result of the restrictions.”

NATs, which provides UK air traffic control, confirmed that “due to adverse weather, temporary air traffic restrictions are in place at Heathrow.

“Restrictions of this sort are only ever applied to maintain safety.”

Ferry services halted

Mr Calder said there are “widescale cancellations” on ferry services across the Irish Sea and along the Scottish coast, with “things getting worse”.

P&O Ferries said journeys between Larne and Cairnryan have been cancelled until at least 20:00 on Sunday.

NorthLink Ferries said it had cancelled all its sailings for the day, while CalMac cancelled a number of services and warned of “possible disruption” on other routes.

StenaLine warned of disruption and advised passengers to check the status of their ferry before travelling to the port.

Ferry company DFDS said it had cancelled seven services between Dover and Calais due to strong winds.

Network Rail warned that strong winds could “severely impact the railway, with train delays and cancellations”.

Train disruption and delays

ScotRail warned that some routes have speed restrictions in place, which would lead to delays, cancellations and revisions of timetables. Disruption is expected until 21:00.

Great Western Railway said there are delays and some cancellations on the line between Exeter St Davids and Okehampton via Crediton, after services were earlier stopped on the line due to the weather.

Nikki Berry from BBC Weather said forecasts suggested that winds will gradually ease through the afternoon and evening.

Much quieter weather is expected from Monday, she said, with temperatures gradually rising to leave all areas in double figures Celsius by Christmas Eve, with “weather impacts minimal over the Christmas period”.

Motoring experts have said this will be the busiest weekend of travel of the year, with the RAC warning it could be a “pretty exhausting experience” and urging drivers to “be patient”.

The AA warned of a “perfect storm” of Christmas getaways and bad weather with a predicted 22.7 million drivers hitting the road on Saturday and 21.3 million on Sunday.

National Highways said the Humber Bridge is closed to high-sided vehicles.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis warned motorists about driving conditions: “With the weekend bringing a mix of strong winds along with heavy, and in some places wintry, showers, it’s going to make many of the estimated seven million getaway trips by car a pretty exhausting experience.”

He urged drivers to “be patient”, adding: “These are journeys that matter to us this time of year, don’t expect to get there the minute your sat-nav says you will.

“Allow yourself a bit of time to make it easy and get there safely.”

Mr Calder said that even though roads are expected to be busy on Sunday, they will likely be less busy than on Monday or Tuesday when people make their final getaways before Christmas.

Away from the roads, the first of the rail closures taking place over the festive period began on Saturday, with a section of the Midland Main line will closed between London St Pancras and Bedford until 29 December as projects costing £29m are completed. This will affect travel to Luton Airport.

Engineering works will also impact other stations over Christmas, including Paddington and Liverpool Street in London, as well as in the Cambridge and Crewe areas.

Asked why so many trains are cancelled over Christmas for work to take place, at a time when people might be more likely to make leisure journeys and use trains if available, Robert Nisbet, the director of nations and regions at the Rail Delivery Group, which represents National Rail and train operators, said “plenty of thought” goes into closures and the festive period is chosen because “on the whole fewer people travel” then.

He added that the engineering works would improve services and reliability

Kenyan Youth Go Missing In Suspected Crackdown on AI-Pictures

The abduction of 25-year-old Billy Mwangi in Embu on Tuesday has sent ripples of concern across Kenya, shining a spotlight on heightened tensions between state authorities and young social media users.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Mwangi being forcibly taken by four armed, hooded men outside a barbershop at approximately 3:30 pm.

His disappearance follows shortly after he made waves online by sharing viral, AI-generated images depicting President William Ruto in a coffin.

Mwangi’s family has lodged a report with the Embu Police Station. This disturbing incident echoes the earlier abduction of Peter Muteti, whose case was reported at Kabete Police Station.

Both individuals have been linked to controversial posts that have reportedly drawn ire from government officials.

The growing crackdown on dissenting voices on social media has become increasingly pronounced in recent weeks.

Notably, a Twitter user known as @LANDLORD ignited controversy by posting an image of a state funeral procession reminiscent of that of a president.

Mokaya, who faced charges for allegedly publishing false information, even called for President Ruto to appear in court as a complainant—a provocative call that has sparked intense public discourse.

The rise in such incidents reflects a troubling trend in Kenya, where young social media users are increasingly in danger of state retribution.

The Gen Z-led protests against the much-debated Finance Bill 2024 saw numerous youths vanish after posting messages deemed inflammatory.

Critics of the government assert that authorities are treading a precarious line between maintaining national security and infringing on civil liberties. “This is not about justice,” a human rights activist commented. “It’s about silencing dissent.”

Others however, say Gen Z have gone too far, crossing the line between fair comment and outright computer misuse.
