Ichung’wah: Gen Z Disrespect Towards Leaders is a Result of Poor Parenting

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has pointed fingers at both parents and the church for what he describes as a troubling ‘disrespectful’ tone exhibited by young people toward elders.

Speaking during a Sunday service, the Kikuyu MP lamented that the traditional values instilled in previous generations are increasingly absent in today’s youth.

Ichung’wah asserted that the church has failed in its moral teachings, contributing to a cultural shift where young people feel emboldened to criticize seniors and authorities in rhetoric that would have been unthinkable in the past. “We have failed as parents and the church,” he said. “What we should be teaching our children in our homes and churches has faltered. We have also failed to bring them back to church.”

His comments come against the backdrop of widespread protests led by the younger generation, known as Gen Z, who have used social media platforms to voice their grievances over issues like government accountability and economic policies. These protests, which have seen increased tensions, have led to tragic consequences, including deaths and numerous injuries.

Ichung’wah further criticized some political leaders, noting that they have strayed from their guiding roles, opting instead to prioritize political rhetoric over spiritual mentorship. “Some of the words our children were using against leaders and their own country were unimaginable in our time,” he remarked.

Echoing this sentiment, President William Ruto recently urged parents to take greater responsibility in guiding their children, acknowledging that many have relinquished their roles to the government. Ruto emphasized the need for proactive parenting to prevent youth from straying into criminal activities and to ensure they grow up with strong moral foundations.

As both leaders call for a return to traditional values and community guidance, the conversation surrounding youth engagement and respect for authority continues to evolve in Kenyan society.

Cyclone Chido Death Toll Rises to 94 in Mozambique, Mayotte

The death toll from Cyclone Chido has climbed to 94 in Mozambique, according to the country’s disaster management agency.

The powerful storm, which swept across southeastern Africa earlier this week, has left a trail of devastation in its wake, displacing thousands and destroying critical infrastructure.

In Mayotte, a French overseas territory that bore the brunt of the cyclone, officials have confirmed 35 fatalities. However, fears are mounting that the true toll may be far higher, with some reports suggesting the number of deaths could reach the thousands.

Rescue efforts in the area have been hampered by widespread flooding and destroyed communication lines, leaving many remote communities inaccessible.

In Mozambique, the cyclone’s aftermath has compounded existing challenges in the wake of post-election civil unrest.

The country’s economic outlook for 2024 is already under review, with Olamide Harrison, the International Monetary Fund’s Mozambique representative, warning that growth projections may be downgraded from the previous forecast of 4.3%.

Humanitarian agencies are working around the clock to provide relief to affected regions, but resources remain stretched. “The situation is dire,” said a Red Cross official on the ground. “We need immediate international support to address the scale of this disaster.”

As Cyclone Chido’s impact continues to unfold, authorities in both Mozambique and Mayotte are calling for urgent aid to help rebuild lives and prevent further loss.

Turkiye: Ambulance Helicopter Crashes, Killing Four Healthcare Workers

A heartbreaking accident unfolded at the Muğla Training and Research Hospital in southwestern Türkiye on Tuesday, when a Eurocopter EC135 helicopter tragically crashed while attempting to take off in heavy fog, claiming the lives of four dedicated health care personnel.

The ill-fated helicopter, which had been stationed in Muğla for official duties, had postponed its departure the previous day due to adverse weather conditions. In an urgent attempt to reach Antalya, it took off on Tuesday morning but quickly encountered dense fog.

The visibility issues led to a tragic collision with the hospital building, resulting in the helicopter crashing into the courtyard.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the identities of the victims as two pilots, a doctor, and a health care worker. The devastating loss has sent shockwaves through the local community, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant coastal towns.

An official investigation has been initiated to uncover the circumstances leading to this tragic incident, as local authorities work tirelessly to piece together the events of that fateful morning.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences via social media. “The news of the loss of four of our brothers in the crash of an air ambulance has deeply saddened our hearts,” he stated. Erdoğan prayed for mercy for the deceased personnel and extended his sympathies to their families and colleagues, highlighting the profound impact of this loss on the entire health care community.

As condolences pour in, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by medical personnel dedicated to serving their communities, even in the most challenging circumstances.

President Ruto Pledges Sh5 Million for Sunday School to Shape Future Leaders

President William Ruto has vowed to donate Sh5 million to AIC Kipkorgot Sunday School, emphasizing the critical role of religious education in building the nation’s character.

Speaking passionately, Ruto highlighted the importance of Sunday school as a foundation for future citizens, stating, “That is the place we lay a firm foundation for the future citizens of Kenya.”

The President’s announcement came during a sermon at Kipkorgot AIC Church, where he urged religious leaders to instill strong moral values in children. “If we can give a solid character foundation to our children, we will reduce incidents of femicide, drug abuse, and crime,” he proclaimed.

This pledge follows a controversial moment last month when the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi rejected a donation from Ruto.

Despite donating Sh600,000 to the church choir and promising additional funds for construction projects, Bishop Philip Anyolo returned the donation, citing a directive from the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops aimed at preventing political interference in church affairs.

During his address, Ruto also called on parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing, insisting that the government cannot replace parental guidance.

“Our priority as parents is to take care of our children,” he said, urging mothers and fathers to lead by example and steer their children away from harmful influences.

Joshua Arap Sang Hague Ghosts Come Back To Haunt Him

Former ICC suspect and ex-radio presenter Joshua Arap Sang has ignited a firestorm of controversy after threatening legal action against a critic who accused him of involvement in the notorious 2007/08 post-election violence (PEV) in Kenya.

Sang, now serving as the Director of Public Communications in the Office of the Chief of Staff, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, promising to drag a X (formerly Twitter) user Nyamisa Chelagat to court for what he termed “unsubstantiated allegations.”

Sang shared a screenshot of his direct message to Chelagat, declaring, “This one must meet me in court in January so that she can present the evidence she alleges I participated in the 2007/8 PEV.”

This bold challenge quickly backfired, sparking a rapid-fire exchange that saw the public rally around Chelagat.

In a cheeky response, Chelagat invited Sang to the ICC, writing, “Lol. Let’s meet in ICC. Na usiniDM till January. Niko sherehe please.”

Notably, prominent figures joined the fray, asserting their positions against Sang.

Humanitarian lawyer Betty offered to provide documented evidence detailing the ICC’s findings, including 40,000 reports of sexual assault during the violence.

Activist Hanifa Adan challenged Sang, urging him to follow through on his legal threats, while lawyer Ndegwa Njiru affirmed pro bono support for Chelagat should Sang make good on his claims.

The backlash highlighted the enduring scars of the PEV, which left over 1,100 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. Kenyans expressed outrage on social media, with many mocking Sang’s threats as futile and reminiscent of the very behavior that led to his indictment.

Sang, who previously claimed innocence, stated in an interview back in 2010, “I went on air to request my listeners to be calm and embrace peace during the time when violence had engulfed the country.”

However, after the ICC dropped the charges against him and former Deputy President William Ruto in 2016, many still remember his controversial past.

President Ruto Announces Dualling Of Nairobi-Nakuru-Malaba Highway

President William Ruto has unveiled plans for the construction of a dual carriageway connecting Nairobi and Nakuru, set to begin next year.

This initiative aims to ease the notorious traffic congestion on the busy highway, especially during peak holiday seasons when motorists face prolonged delays. The project will eventually extend to Malaba, enhancing travel and trade along this crucial route.

Speaking at Kipkorgot AIC Church in Uasin Gishu on Sunday, Ruto addressed recent traffic grievances from the public, highlighting the importance of infrastructure development in boosting economic growth and connectivity.

In addition to road improvements, the President focused on Kenya’s economic progress, citing lower inflation, increased exports, and enhanced food security through government subsidies on agricultural inputs. He reiterated that these measures have significantly bolstered local food production, reducing reliance on imported maize and sugar.

On healthcare, Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to a new health insurance plan, describing it as transformative for the sector. He expressed confidence in its potential to deliver long-term benefits for Kenyans.

Furthermore, the President defended the government’s livestock vaccination program, which aims to curb diseases like foot and mouth, countering criticism about vaccine safety. He called for unity in tackling national issues, including gender-based violence, and urged churches to play a proactive role in nurturing moral values among the youth to prevent such societal challenges.

Ruto’s announcements reflect his administration’s focus on infrastructure, health, and social cohesion as key components for national development.

Bad Samaritans: Two Travellers Robbed 409,000 After Getting ‘Lift’ To Mombasa

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing a robbery that occurred on Christmas Eve, where two passengers were relieved of Sh409,000 and other valuables while en route to Mombasa.

The victims, identified as a man from Kiambu and a woman residing in Mombasa, were waiting for a bus at Mlolongo when a driver of a private vehicle, accompanied by three other men, offered them a lift. With transport challenges worsening this festive season, the offer seemed like a blessing. However, the situation quickly took a dark turn when the vehicle reached the Simba Cement area of Athiriver.

According to a statement released by the DCI, upon arrival at their destination, the occupants revealed their true intentions. They brandished daggers, holding the unsuspecting travelers hostage. The victims were blindfolded and restrained with ropes while the assailants searched them for valuables.

During the harrowing ordeal, the male victim was coerced into surrendering access to his mobile banking apps, leading to the withdrawal of Sh340,000.

Additionally, Sh20,000 was stolen from his M-Pesa account. The robbers also made off with his Samsung Galaxy phone and a power bank, valued at approximately Sh75,000. The female victim lost Sh9,000 from her M-Pesa account along with other personal items.

After the ordeal, the suspects abandoned the victims in the Ngarariga area of Limuru. Fortunately, good Samaritans came to their aid and escorted them to the Ngarariga police station for assistance. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

In light of this incident, the DCI is urging the public to remain vigilant, especially during this festive season. “We call upon members of the public to report any suspicious persons or activities around their neighborhoods,” the DCI stated.

Police patrols will be increased to ensure the safety of Kenyans traveling during the holidays.

Pedestrians and Boda Boda Riders Top List of Road Crash Victims as Festive Season Fatalities Surge

Pedestrians and boda boda riders have been identified as the most vulnerable victims of road crashes, with alarming statistics showing an increase in fatalities during the festive season, according to a recent report by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The report revealed that as of November 2024, over 4,282 people had lost their lives in road crashes—marking a significant rise compared to the same period in previous years.

Of these, pedestrians accounted for 1,600 fatalities, followed by 900 motorcyclists, making them the most affected groups.

Speaking in Mombasa during the launch of a road safety awareness campaign ahead of the December festivities, NTSA Deputy General Manager for the Coast Region, John Parteroi, emphasized the need for vigilance among road users. He warned that the festive season typically sees a spike in road accidents and outlined measures aimed at reversing the trend.

“We have initiated this campaign to educate and caution road users to be more vigilant. Drivers, pedestrians, and motorcyclists must adhere to traffic regulations to ensure their safety and the safety of others,” Parteroi stated.

The campaign, launched on December 10, 2024, targets all road users, with a special focus on drivers of passenger service vehicles, pedestrians, and boda boda riders. Parteroi noted that passenger service vehicle drivers had signed a pledge to drive safely, reduce speeding, and comply with traffic laws.

The initiative, conducted in partnership with the National Police Service (NPS), Bloomberg Philanthropies for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), and the Mombasa County Government, aims to educate road users and enforce strict adherence to traffic regulations.

High-Risk Areas and Reckless Driving

The Kilifi-Malindi road near Kijipwa has been flagged as a high-risk zone, with frequent accidents attributed to speeding and reckless driving. Boda boda riders were also highlighted as a significant factor in pedestrian deaths, often due to traffic violations and hit-and-run incidents.

“Boda boda riders can contribute to safer roads by following traffic rules, avoiding reckless behaviour, and wearing helmets and reflective jackets, especially at night,” Parteroi added.

Technological Enforcement and Sensitization

To curb speeding and reckless driving, NTSA is deploying advanced technological devices capable of monitoring and capturing speeding vehicles on major highways. Parteroi reiterated that private motorists are prohibited from carrying passengers for commercial purposes, a rule reserved for licensed transport Saccos and authorized operators like Uber and Bolt.

Vipul Patel, Coordinator for Bloomberg Philanthropies, emphasized the importance of sustained road safety campaigns. “Speeding remains a major global challenge in road safety. It not only increases the likelihood of crashes but also the severity of injuries sustained,” he said.

Calls for Caution During Festive Season

As the festive season unfolds, NTSA is urging all road users to exercise caution. Pedestrians have been advised to use designated footbridges and avoid dangerous road crossings. Passenger service vehicles, including matatus, have been reminded to adhere to passenger limits of 9 to 14 depending on vehicle size.

“We will continue to educate and enforce road safety measures to save lives,” Parteroi affirmed, urging motorists to drive responsibly and observe traffic rules during the holiday period.

The campaign serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by the roads during the festive season and the collective responsibility required to prevent avoidable tragedies.

Annoyance As Travellers Endure A Frigid Night

Traffic on the Narobi-Nakuru Highway was chaotic for the second day in a row on Saturday.

Many drivers and passengers reported that they were trapped on the roadways, even though more police officers were stationed along the route to control traffic.

At nine in the morning, a bus accident in the Kimende region exacerbated the pandemonium, according to police spokesperson Resila Onyango.

“There was a bus accident at Kimende that slowed the traffic, but it has been removed, and traffic is now flowing though slowly,” she said.

Some claimed they left Nairobi around four in the morning but were enmeshed in the commotion when they arrived at Limuru.

Beginning Friday morning, December 20, the turmoil continued all day until around ten o’clock at night, when authorities declared that the situation had improved.

The pandemonium returned on Saturday morning when more drivers got on the road.

Rainfall during the night helped to exacerbate the problem. On the Mai Mahiu route, the same thing happened, and more police were sent out to facilitate traffic.

Caleb Amisi, a Saboti MP who is among those impacted, claimed to have been trapped in the turmoil for over 12 hours on Friday.

“I left Nairobi at 5 am driving myself and hoping to reach Kitale early for an 1 pm event at Kitale National Polytechnic. After encountering heavy traffic first at the Limuru bridge, then towards Kikopey, Nakuru town, and Eldoret town. This is the time I am arriving home,” he wrote.

Drivers reported that although there were more police officers on the road on Saturday, the chaos persisted.
