4 construction workers killed near Kenya-Somalia border

Gunmen in northern Kenya fatally shot four construction workers at a hospital site near a refugee camp and the border with Somalia where a militant group is active, police said Saturday.

A group of eight workers were resting Friday when they were attacked, leaving four shot dead at close range, a police official who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue told The Associated Press. The other four workers escaped unharmed, the official said.

The hospital construction site is near Kenya’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab, and the border with Somalia where the al-Shabab militant group is based. Garissa county has in the past been attacked by al-Shabab militants who cross through the porous border.

Local police say the Friday attack may have been staged by an armed group that had warned the contractor to stay away from the area, which they consider their turf.

Northern Kenya has in recent days seen violence that has left several people dead in different locations.

On Wednesday, police at the Mandera border point recovered an improvised explosive device that was about to detonate. Last week, two herders were killed at a watering point, also in the Mandera area, by gunmen. In April, five people were killed in a donkey cart explosion in Elwak town.

The government says security operations in northern Kenya have been increased.

The recent attacks have forced the government to suspend plans to reopen the 698-kilometer (434-mile) Kenya-Somalia border that was closed in 2011, although illegal crossings are still rampant.

22 Chinese nationals sentenced to prison in Zambia for cybercrimes

A Zambian court on Friday sentenced 22 Chinese nationals to long prison terms for cybercrimes that included internet fraud and online scams targeting Zambians and other people from Singapore, Peru and the United Arab Emirates.

The Magistrates Court in the capital, Lusaka, sentenced them for terms ranging from seven to 11 years. The court also fined them between $1,500 and $3,000 after they pleaded guilty to charges of computer-related misrepresentation, identity fraud and illegally operating a network or service on Wednesday. A man from Cameroon also was sentenced and fined on the same changes.

They were part of a group of 77 people, the majority of them Zambians, arrested in April over what police described as a “sophisticated internet fraud syndicate.”

Director-general of the drug enforcement commission, Nason Banda, said investigations began after authorities noticed a spike in the number of cyber-related fraud cases and many people complained about inexplicably losing money from their mobile phones or bank accounts.

Officers from the commission, police, the immigration department and the anti-terrorism unit in April swooped on a Chinese-run business in an upmarket suburb of Lusaka, arresting the 77, including those sentenced Friday. Authorities recovered over 13,000 local and foreign mobile phone SIM cards, two firearms and 78 rounds of ammunition during the raid.

The business, named Golden Top Support Services, had employed “unsuspecting” Zambians aged between 20 and 25 to use the SIM cards to engage “in deceptive conversations with unsuspecting mobile users across various platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, chat rooms and others, using scripted dialogues,” Banda said in April after the raid. The locals were freed on bail.

Father Of 12 Nick Cannon Has His Testicles Insured For Ksh 1.3 Billion

American comedian Nick Cannon has raised eyebrows after taking out $ 10 million insurance on his balls.

According to the father of 12, he is defending the royal jewels.

He used Dr. Squatch’s Ball Valuation Tool to evaluate his assets based on “size, favourite features, and bedroom maneuvers.”

“Haters say it’s time for me to stop having kids and put this super sperm to rest, but I’m doubling down on these valuable balls and my future kids,” Nick, 43, said of his decision. “Shoutout to Dr. Squatch for giving my balls the credit they deserve and hooking me up with the protection I need to keep this family tree rolling!”

With this new insurance coverage, the All That alum has acquired the renowned and hitherto unknown title of “Most Valuable Balls”—at least in Dr. Squatch’s eyes.

After all, Nick is never against having more children.

“I’m chilling right now. There’s no plans on the horizon as of yet,” Nick told People in a January interview. “It’s so funny, everybody’s always trying to get me to have more kids. It’s like, 12 ain’t enough?”

In fact, while he co-parents a dozen children with ex-wife Mariah Carey, as well as Brittany Bell, Abby De La Rosa, Bre Tiesi, LaNisha Cole, and Alyssa Scott, he is open to increasing the number to a baker’s dozen, saying, “Thirteen is a nice number. It’s obviously

“As much as I was open to every single child that I have, I can’t say the majority of them were planned,” Nick explained on The Language of Love with Dr. Laura Berman last year. “If you would have told me in 2012 when I was still married and just diagnosed with Lupus that 10 years from now, that I would have 12 children, I’d be like there is no way in the world that I would ever plan that or that would happen.”

South Korea to blast ‘unbearable’ loudspeaker broadcasts aimed at North Korea

South Korea will begin loudspeaker broadcasts directed at North Korea on Sunday that will be “unbearable” for the Kim Jong Un regime, its National Security Council said, after Pyongyang resumed sending balloons carrying trash across the border.

The Council met on Sunday morning, after dozens of balloons with trash attached were found in Seoul and in areas near the border earlier in the day and overnight.

“The measures we will take may be unbearable for the North Korean regime but they will send a message of hope and light to the North’s troops and its people,” the Council said.

South Korea has warned it would take “unendurable” measures against the North for sending the trash balloons, which could include blaring propaganda broadcasts from huge loudspeakers set up at the border directed at the North.

Pyongyang started sending balloons carrying trash and manure across the border in May and has said the move was in retaliation to anti-North leaflets flown by South Korean activists as part of a propaganda campaign.

On June 2, it said it would temporarily halt sending the balloons because 15 tons of trash it sent was probably enough to get the message across on how “unpleasant” it was. However, it vowed to resume if leaflets are again flown from the South by sending hundred times the amount.

A group of South Korean activists defied the warning and have since flown more balloons to the North with leaflets criticising its leader Kim Jong Un together with USB sticks containing K-pop videos and dramas, and U.S. dollar notes.

North Korea has shown some of the angriest reactions towards the leaflet campaign and the loudspeaker broadcasts, in some cases firing weapons at the balloons and speakers in the past.

South Korea stopped the broadcasts under an agreement signed by the two Korea’s leaders in 2018 declaring a new era of peace and harmony and vowing to ease military tensions to eliminate the chances of another war breaking out.

But tensions have mounted since then as North Korea pushed ahead with the development of ballistic missiles and declared it sees South Korea as its “enemy number one”, unveiling a range of weapons that it said were aimed at the South.

South Korea’s broadcasts are blasted from multiple speakers stacked in large racks and include world news and information about democratic and capitalist society with a mix of popular K-pop music. The sound is believed to travel more than 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) into North Korea.

South Korea’s military said the North launched about 330 balloons with trash attached starting Saturday and about 80 of them dropped in South Korea.

Narok County to set up special bursary for widows

Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu announced that his administration will establish a special bursary fund exclusively for widows in the county.

Speaking at Ole Ntimama Stadium before a gathering of over 5,000 widows on Saturday, Governor Ntutu highlighted that widows’ children, who are often the most deserving, have frequently been excluded from the bursary programs in various wards.

“It has reached a time as a government we have said we shall slash a budget on bursary in every ward and set it up for these widows,” said Governor Ntutu.

The widows, who were celebrating their unification under the One Widows umbrella, expressed to the county leader that since losing their husbands, they have had to rely on well-wishers.

“Our children have been missing out on these bursaries, which is why we thought coming together with one voice would help us,” said one of the widows.

Governor Ntutu urged the widows to appoint representatives to liaise with his office on the modalities and the amount of money to be allocated to the fund.

“I will work with these officials you have given me so that we know how much money we can get from each ward,” Ntutu added.
He also encouraged the widows to explore additional revenue streams to support their families.

Look Up TV Closes Down after 6 Years

Look Up TV has announced leaving the Kenyan broadcast media sphere after six years of being in operation.

The station’s senior Swahili newscaster, Tende Anyula, announced at the end of his bulletin.

Without disclosing the reason behind the closure, the journalist thanked the station’s audience and journalists for making it gain the status of a national media house.

“Look Up TV’s journey that started six years ago is now coming to an end. Today is the last day for English and Swahili news programmes. The journey would not have been possible were it not for our team of journalists and audience. If you don’t find us, know we have ended our programmes,” said Anyula.

He announced that the network’s programmes ceased to exist effective on Friday, June 7.

Since its establishment in 2018, the free-to-air terrestrial channel has strived to reach the top tier by attracting incredible talents and programmes.

To sell the station was its political talk show programmes which featured high-level opinion makers in the field.

The Kenyan media has been grappling with revenue suppression as the globe continues to recover from the ravages of COVID-19.

For a time, to keep up with the drastic reality of the change in the convergent multi-media landscape, media houses have been striving to remain afloat by undertaking such measures as downsizing and scrapping programmes believed to be redundant.

As a result, practitioners and other players have been losing their jobs.

On Friday, June 7, the Nation Media Group (NMG) announced it would lay off part of its staff due to financial challenges.

In an internal memo, NMG Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gitagama said the media house is getting reduced earnings from traditional platforms as a result of rapid transformation in the media landscape.

“We at the Nation Media Group have also faced challenges as a result of reduced earnings from traditional platforms occasioned by these unprecedented disruptions. However, we are cognizant of the immense digital content creation and consumption opportunities that exist not only in Kenya but across the continent,” read the memo in part.

Gitagama noted that the organization would lay off staff effective June 14, 2024, as the media house plans to accelerate digital transformation.

“We must evolve into a leaner, and more agile company that will innovate at pace and drive the efficient delivery of services to our customers. This will, unfortunately, necessitate a workforce reduction, effective Friday, June 14 2024,” the NMG CEO stated.

US, British Citizens Among Suspects On Trial In Congo After Thwarted Coup

More than 50 defendants, including six with U.S., British, Canadian or Belgian citizenship, appeared in court in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday charged with taking part in a failed coup and other offences that carry the death penalty.

Armed men briefly occupied an office of the presidency in the capital Kinshasa on May 19 before their leader, U.S.-based Congolese politician Christian Malanga, was killed by security forces.

The defendants include Malanga’s 22-year-old son Marcel Malanga, two other U.S. citizens and the three other holders of foreign passports. All have Congolese roots.

The first day of the military trial took place under a tent in the yard of Ndolo military prison on the outskirts of Kinshasa. The defendants filed in wearing blue and yellow prison-issued tops and lined up before the judge.

All 53 face charges including illegal arms possession, criminal conspiracy, terrorism and attempts to destabilise state institutions and undermine the integrity of the state, some of which risk the death penalty or lengthy prison sentences.

The defendants were identified in court, and charges read, but they were not asked to enter a plea.

Congo lifted a moratorium on the death penalty in March, citing treachery and espionage in recurring armed conflicts as the reason.

Richard Bondo, a lawyer for one of the U.S. detainees, Benjamin Zalman-Polun, told Reuters it was too soon to talk of possible extradition, and the presumption of innocence applied.

It was not possible to reach the other defendants or their lawyers for comment.

Imperious Jacobs rules Rome as Italy basks in ‘Super Saturday’

Home favourite Marcell Jacobs retained his European 100m crown in Rome as Team Italy basked in their very own ‘Super Saturday’ with two further golds to surge to the top of the medals table.

In a night of high-quality track and field at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico, there was a record-extending seventh discus title for Croatia’s Sandra Elkasevic.

There were also third successive European golds for Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men’s 5 000m, Belgium’s Nafi Thiam in the heptathlon and Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou in the men’s long jump.

But the night had a decidedly Italian hue to it as the host nation soared atop the medals table with five golds, four silvers and a bronze for an overall tally of 10. In second place after two days of competition are the Netherlands, with a gold, silver and bronze.

Italian team captain Gianmarco Tamberi, the world high jump champion, had said he wanted to end up number one after a seventh place finish last time out in Munich in 2022.

And Jacobs lived up to his billing, scorching to victory in a season’s best of 10.02 seconds in what was a perfect tonic ahead of the Paris Olympics, just seven weeks away.

Italian teammate Chituru Ali took silver in 10.05sec, with Briton Romel Glave claiming bronze in 10.06sec.

It capped off a magical 20 minutes for the Italians, after first world silver medallist Leonardo Fabbri threw a championship record of 20.45m as he dominated the men’s shot put to deny Croatian Filip Mihaljevic back-to-back Euro golds.

Then just minutes later and the crowd were chanting like football fans as Lorenzo Ndele Simonelli surged to victory in the 110m hurdles in 13.05sec to set up Jacob’s final fanfare.

ELKASEVIC EXTENDS EURO RECORD

Norwegian Ingebrigtsen also shone on a heady night’s entertainment by taking the lead of the 5 000m at the bell and sprinting away for gold in a season’s best of 13:20.11.

There was to be no denying Croatian discus legend Elkasevic — better known by her maiden name Perkovic, who claimed a convincing victory with a best of 67.04m.

The 33-year-old, twice Olympic gold medallist and a two-time former world champion, is now unbeaten on the European stage since Barcelona in 2010, winning successive continental editions in Zurich, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Berlin and Munich over the past 12 years.

In a session that favoured old heads, Thiam, herself a two-time Olympic champion and twice world title holder, also wrapped up her third successive European heptathlon gold in dominant style.

Over the two days of competition, she clocked 13.74sec in the 100m hurdles, managed bests of 1.95m in the high jump and 15.06m in the shot put, timed 24.81sec in the 200m, went out to 6.59m in the long jump and threw 53.00m in the javelin.

The Belgian completed the 800m in a personal best of 2:11.79 to leave her on a winning 6,848 points. France’s Auriana Lazraq-Khlass took silver with 6,635pts, while Thiam’s teammate Noor Vidts rounded out the podium (6,596).

In the long jump, Tentoglou — also the Olympic and world champion — made it a third continental title in style, smashing the championship record twice to win in 8.65 metres.

Tentoglou sailed out to three world leads before improving, by 24cm, the previous season’s best set by Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer in qualifying on Friday.

Ehammer failed to improve on that form, managing 8.31m for bronze behind 19-year-old Italian Mattia Furlani, whose 8.38m was a world under-20 record and best ever championship jump for silver.

There was a third championship record of the night in the women’s 100m hurdles, Cyrena Samba-Mayela clocking 12.31sec for the win ahead of Swiss Ditaji Kambundji (12.40) and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (12.42).

Sweden’s world silver medallist Perseus Karlstrom fought off the attentions of Spain’s Paul McGrath to win the 20km race walk in 1hr 19min 13sec.

Italy’s Francesco Fortunato taking bronze to set up a night of medals for the host nation.

Endrick grabs winner as Brazil sink Mexico

Teenage striker Endrick headed home an injury-time winner as Brazil defeated Mexico 3-2 in a warm-up friendly ahead of this month’s Copa America on Saturday.

The Brazilians looked to be cruising to victory after goals from Fulham’s Andreas Pereira and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli fired the South American giants into a 2-0 lead at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas.

But Mexico staged an unlikely late fightback after Julian Quinones pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.

Guillermo Martinez looked to have secured a draw for Mexico in the third minute of time added on, lashing in a rebound from his own header after a corner to make it 2-2.

Yet Mexico barely had time to regroup before Brazil took the lead again.

Vinicius Jr lofted an inviting cross into the penalty area from wide on the left and his new Real Madrid teammate Endrick timed his jump to perfection to glance in a header past Mexico goalkeeper Julio Gonzalez for 3-2.

The victory extended Brazil’s unbeaten record under new coach Dorival Junior, who oversaw 1-0 win over England at Wembley in March followed by a 3-3 draw with Spain.

Brazil face the United States in a friendly in Orlando on Wednesday in what will be their final game before they open their Copa America campaign against Costa Rica on June 24.

Haiti’s Interim PM Stable After Hospitalization For ‘Slight Illness’

Haiti’s new interim prime minister, Garry Conille, is in stable condition after being hospitalized for an unspecified illness on Saturday afternoon, his office said.

Conille, 58, who took office just over a week ago, was rushed to hospital after suffering breathing problems, local media reported earlier. His office did not provide details on the cause of his hospitalization.

“Following a week of intense activities, the Prime Minister … had a slight illness on the afternoon of Saturday June 8, 2024 and went to the hospital for treatment,” his office said in a statement.

“His situation is stable for the moment,” it added.

Reuters images showed several ambulances and police officers outside a hospital in a suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince where Conille was reportedly undergoing treatment.

Conille had briefly led the country over a decade ago, and was most recently a former regional director at U.N. children’s agency UNICEF.

He was named interim prime minister on May 29 by a transition council with the mandate to restore stability and take back control from violent gangs.

The transition council aims to hold elections before Feb. 7, 2026, as laid out in Haiti’s constitution, after a series of crises in the country’s leadership.

President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in 2021, leaving Haiti to this day without a president, while Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned in March this year after he left Haiti to seek support for the Kenyan security mission and was unable to re-enter the country.
