Ruto Holds Urgent Crisis Meetings Amid Growing Political Turmoil in Kenya Kwanza

President William Ruto has for the first time commented on the ongoing United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party grassroot elections.

On Saturday, June 8, Ruto chaired UDA Party National Executive Committee (NEC) at State House where a raft of decisions was made on the ongoing party elections.

During the meeting, the National Election Board (NEB) gave their brief on the ongoing polls and President Ruto gave his nod on the poll’s transparency.

The President asked the NEB Chairman Eng. Anthony Mwaura to proceed with County level elections in the counties of Homabay and Busia, whose constituency polls were not challenged.

On Nairobi where two camps are at loggerheads on the process of elections, Ruto directed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to lead in negotiations that will lead to a political settlement.

“Nairobi’s polls can be held on the same day as the other two counties,” he said.

However, he directed that the elections in Narok and West Pokot, which have been contested in court be suspended pending the outcome of the disputes.

“Where the courts have issued orders stopping the election, we have to postpone. We must respect court orders,” Ruto said.

Additionally, Ruto settled the contentious issue of composition of the National Delegates Conference.

The NEC adopted the formula on sharing of delegates on county basis depending on the presidential vote that each county returned to the UDA presidential candidate in 2022 elections.

This process will see counties that garnered over 50 percent produce 20 delegates each to the NDC, with others below that mark sharing other slots on pro-rata basis.

Further, the President gave NEB the go-ahead to proceed with phase two elections in 13 counties.

In another statement, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala said the Committee issued appropriate directions to ensure the satisfaction of all contestants and proper remedial measures of any disputes arising from the elections.

The Committee emphasized that the elections shall continue as scheduled and the process shall be carried out through the UDA electronic voting system.

“The committee acknowledged the party’s capacity to handle internal disputes among members. It urged the activation of the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee to ensure disputes among members are resolved amicably,” read the statement.

NEC encouraged party members with election disputes to utilize all internal dispute resolution mechanisms before exploring other options.

Malala further reiterated the importance of respecting the party organs and officials.

“NEC emphasized that discipline is the engine that oils the party. This follows recent occurrences where party members violated election rules and regulations and instances where party members contradicted and or disrespected senior party officials on party positions,” read the statement.

The NEC urged the Internal Disciplinary Committee to activate itself and address these issues promptly.

Kenya Kwanza’s PG Meeting at State House Postponed

The meeting of the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group scheduled for Monday, June 10 at the State House, Naieobi has been postponed.

President William Ruto was scheduled to chair the meeting aimed at deliberating on the Finance Bill 2024 and the position lawmakers should take in the governing coalition.

Senate Majority Leader and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot revealed that the meeting was called off and rescheduled for a later date (June 17) following a request from the MPs.

He said lawmakers had requested more time for the National Assembly Finance and Planning Committee to take more views from taxpayers and other stakeholders.

“A PG would take place on Monday. But it was postponed after MPs requested more time to complete the report after meeting stakeholders on the bill,” Cheruiyot said.

The senator, however, dismissed the belief that the delay was due to perceived tension in the ruling coalition, which has seen divisions of late.

The Finance Bill 2024 is yet to be tabled in the National Assembly for its first reading as it goes through the legislative process.

Kenyans have poked holes in the tax proposals there, arguing that it will damage their economic well-being.

Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga criticized the bill, saying the country will become worse if it is not revised.

In a statement on Friday, June 8, Raila said the country’s tax burden is at its highest level since independence, but public services have remained largely on their knees.

The former Prime Minister pointed out that the Finance Bill 2024 does not comply with the tax dictums of predictability, simplicity, transparency, equality, administrative convenience and fairness.

He called the bill a regressive tax that will hit low-income people with taxes on more fronts than high-income people.

“It is worse than 2023, an investment killer and a huge millstone around the necks of millions of poor Kenyans who must have hoped that the tears they shed over taxes last year would make the government reduce the tax burden in 2024, ” read the statement in part.

The opposition leader also highlighted the proposed taxes on bread and edible oil, saying this would lead to food costs rising.

Kenya Air Force Honours Late General Ogolla As It Marks 60th Anniversary

The Kenya Air Force (KAF) celebrated its 60th anniversary on Saturday, June 8, after six decades of dedicated service.

During the occasion, renowned figures including President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, and the late Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, received distinguished medals.

President Ruto was honoured with a mounted eagle statue, symbolising his vision, courage, strength, determination, and grace. The Kenya Air Force commended him, stating, “These aspects we draw from your strategic leadership and support.”

General Ogolla, who tragically perished in a plane crash on April 18, 2024, was posthumously celebrated with a miniature sword, honouring his service. The miniature sword is awarded to officers who have had distinguished service in the military.

Joining the Kenya Air Force on May 2, 1984, Ogolla was commissioned a year later and rose through the ranks, serving as Vice Chief of Defence Forces before his appointment as Chief of Defence Forces in 2023.

His award was received by Joel Ogolla on behalf of the family.

Founded on June 1, 1964, the Kenya Air Force was established with a mission to defend and maintain the sovereignty of Kenya’s airspace.

Poland’s Milik To Miss Euro 2024 With Knee Injury

Poland attacker Arkadiusz Milik will miss Euro 2024 after suffering a knee injury in a pre-tournament warm-up match, the Polish federation (PZPN) announced Saturday.

The Juventus player, 30, picked up the injury during a 3-1 friendly win for the Poles against Ukraine in Warsaw on Friday.

“During the friendly match against Ukraine, the Polish national team suffered a number of injuries, one of which – that of Arkadiusz Milik – unfortunately proved serious enough to exclude the footballer from the final tournament of the European Championships,” said the PZPN in a statement on its website.

“The player will return to his club and will undergo an arthroscopy of the knee joint.”

During the match against fellow Euro 2024 participants Ukraine, Polish players Nicola Zalewski, Michal Skoras, Bartosz Salamon, Jakub Kiwior and Kacper Urbanski also picked up knocks.

Kenya Air Force Marks 60 Years of Service

The Kenya Air Force celebrated its 60th anniversary at Moi Air Base in Nairobi, with President William Ruto and Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale presiding over the event.

The celebration showcased the commitment to modernize the Kenya Air Force and enhance its capabilities.

Major General Dedan Njuguna Gichuru, the longest-serving Air Force commander, was honored with the Kenya Air Force’s most prestigious award.

The event also paid tribute to the late General Francis Ogolla, former Chief of the Defence Forces, with a posthumous award.

President Ruto highlighted the extraordinary commitment of the Kenya Air Force to safeguarding the skies, defending sovereignty, and maintaining peace and security in the region.

The ceremony included a display of skills by a paratrooper flying the Kenyan flag and a dance by President Ruto with young children.

Putin Says Russia Does Not Need To Use Nuclear Weapons For Victory In Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday there was no need to use nuclear weapons to deliver victory for Moscow in Ukraine, the strongest signal yet from the Kremlin chief that there will not be a nuclear strike.

Putin, whose forces have been making advances in eastern Ukraine in recent months, said he did not see the conditions for the use of such weapons and requested that people stop discussing the nuclear topic.

However, Putin, who leads the world’s biggest nuclear power, said he did not rule out changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which sets out the conditions under which such weapons could be used.

He also said that if necessary Russia could test a nuclear weapon, though he saw no need to do so at the present time.

Russia’s published 2020 nuclear doctrine sets out the conditions under which a Russian president would consider using a nuclear weapon: broadly as a response to an attack using nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction, or to the use of conventional weapons against Russia “when the very existence of the state is put under threat”.

“If necessary, we will conduct tests. So far, there is no need for this either, since our information and computer capabilities allow us to produce everything in its current form.”

Karaganov last year proposed a limited nuclear strike on a NATO member in Europe to force the West to back off in the conflict over Ukraine and thus avert World War Three.

U.S. President Joe Biden last week relaxed some restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S. weaponry inside Russia, prompting warnings from Moscow of a potentially dangerous escalation in the conflict.

DPP Orders DCI To Investigate Nairobi Preacher For Ethnic Incitement

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate a Nairobi preacher for allegedly making statements that could increase ethnic tensions across the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ODPP stated that the preacher’s comments could promote ethnic tension, anger, animosity, violence, and discrimination among Kenyans.

“In one of the videos, the speaker utters the words: “…while Kikuyus are fighting Luos, Woriahs are taking over Kenya.” In the other video, the speaker says: I will make myself part of the people who have started the struggle for the liberation of the Kikuyu. I will tell these people that our enemy is not Ruto, our enemy is the Somalis,” noted the ODPP.

The ODPP subsequently directed the DCI and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to promptly submit their investigation findings to the agency for further action.

CS Kindiki Slams DP Gachagua’s ‘One Man, One Vote, One Shilling’ Slogan

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has slammed the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ mantra, describing it as myopic and destructive to Kenya’s future.

Kindiki claimed in a statement on Friday that supporters of the slogan, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, do not understand its implications and long-term effects for the nation.

Kindiki went on to suggest that the slogan lacks substance because it is not based on any scientific or economic principles, but rather appears to have been taken from casual conversation, and that it cannot be relied on to manage Kenya’s complicated economic difficulties.

“The cliché is neither a scientific principle nor is it an economic model of any kind. It is a mantra picked from casual banter and will fall flat when juxtaposed with the constitutional ideals and values upon which our nation is founded,” said Kindiki.

Additionally, the CS stressed that every region of Kenya should have the opportunity to prosper, not at the expense of others but as integral parts of the whole nation.

“Every part of Kenya is entitled to prosperity not alone or at the expense of any other part of Kenya but rather, as part of the whole,” he said.

“The destiny and success of Kenya is inextricably linked to the destiny and success of each part of Kenya. One nation, one flag, one people.”

DP Gachagua spoke of the ‘one man, one vote, one shilling’ revenue sharing formula during a women’s economic empowerment event in Samburu County on Friday.

Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit criticized the formula, telling the Deputy President that it will deny the Northern frontier counties their rightful growth.

Muguka Growing Counties Support 2023 Crop Regulation Law

Leaders from Muguka-growing areas have supported legislation that would tax but protect muguka and miraa growers.

The Crops (Miraa) Regulations, 2023 were introduced on April 5, 2023, to establish a regulatory framework for Kenya’s miraa subsector, however they have never been completely implemented.

In September 2023, governors from muguka/miraa-growing regions petitioned senators to reject the regulations, claiming that their views were not integrated into the recommendations.

The Miraa Regulations allow the Cabinet Secretary to levy miraa produce or products by a notification in the gazette.

The levy imposed shall be at a rate of Sh2 per kilogramme of miraa produce imported or exported.

“There shall be a levy imposed on miraa products destined for export based on Free on Board value at a rate of two per cent, imported miraa products at a rate of four per cent of the customs value,” the regulations reads.

In a meeting in Machakos on Thursday, leaders said they support the law because it guarantees protection of farmers and traders.

“Miraa/muguka has a fully funded Directorate from the Government of Kenya established under the Agriculture and Food Authority Act (The Miraa/Muguka, Pyrethrum, and other Industrial Crops Directorate (MPICD)) to regulate, develop, and promote miraa, pyrethrum, and other industrial crops subsectors in Kenya,” said Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who read the statement on behalf of leaders from Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi and Meru counties.

The leaders are protesting bans and irregular levies imposed on miraa and muguka by Coast counties.

The forum, convened by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including MPs, county government officials, miraa farmers, traders and research experts.

Miraa is categorized as a scheduled crop under the Crops Act, 2013, alongside other key cash crops such as coffee and tea.

Police detonate IED recovered at border point in Mandera

An improvised explosive device found buried under a shade used by police officers manning the main Kenya-Somalia border at the Border Point Sector Three on Wednesday morning has been safely detonated in Mandera town.

It was connected to a detonator and mobile phone, indicating it was ready to explode.

Police said they noticed the device in a metallic container next to a wall of an abandoned house. They said officers manning the area use it to shield themselves from the scorching sun.

A multi-agency team visited the scene and ordered the area be cordoned off as they deployed robots to remove and detonate the gadget.

Officials said metal shrapnel fragments and a destroyed cell phone were recovered.

The area is usually under surveillance over fears of attacks from al Shabaab.

The recovery comes almost a month after a similar explosive killed at least eight people at a food kiosk in Elwak town.

The incident happened on April 29 morning, opposite an Administration Police camp.

The targeted premise housed non-locals who included teachers, nurses and police officers.

Officials said they believe the incident was set up by al Shabaab terrorists or their remnants operating in the area.
