Fiji PM Wins International Athletics Medal, At 75

Fiji’s prime minister wound back the clock on Wednesday by winning a bronze medal at an international athletics championship, aged 75.

Sitiveni Rabuka, who competed for Fiji at both rugby and athletics in his youth, finished on the podium for his age category in the shot put at the Oceania championships held in Suva.

World leaders taking part in sports events is nothing new, but it is rare for one to walk away with a medal from an international competition.

Rabuka earned his bronze with a throw of 7.09 metres to finish behind two Australian rivals in the 75-79 category for the Oceania region.

“Even at 75, I hope to inspire the younger generation to develop a habit of keeping fit and staying healthy,” he posted on his Facebook page.

“It was indeed a morale booster for me,” Rabuka added, alongside a picture of him holding the medal.

The septuagenarian had previously missed another medal on Monday, by finishing fourth for his age in the discus.

It’s 50 years since the politician represented Fiji in the hammer throw, shot put, discus and decathlon at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.

He also scrummed down as a prop forward for the national rugby team.

A coup-maker turned politician, Rabuka is an ex-soldier who returned to the premiership in 2022 after a 23-year hiatus.

The former lieutenant colonel led two coups in 1987, earning the nickname “Rambo” by seizing power after troops took over parliament on his signal.

He retired from the military to enter politics, taking his no-nonsense style of command from the parade ground to parliament.

He was elected prime minister in 1992 and held power until he was defeated at the 1999 polls.

Rabuka returned to office as head of the coalition government following elections in December 2022.

TikTok Admits Cyberattack Targeting Brands And Celebrity Accounts, Including CNN

Short video app TikTok has taken measures to stop a cyberattack targeting several brand and celebrity accounts, including news network CNN, a spokesperson for the company said on Tuesday.

“We have been collaborating closely with CNN to restore account access and implement enhanced security measures to safeguard their account moving forward,” the spokesperson said.

TikTok said that the number of accounts compromised is “very small” and it is working with affected account owners to restore access if needed.

A source at TikTok told Reuters the account of reality TV star Paris Hilton was targeted but had not been compromised.

TikTok parent company ByteDance is currently challenging a law in courts that requires it to sell TikTok by next January or face a ban in the country. The White House said it wants to see Chinese-based ownership ended on national security grounds.

TikTok has argued it will not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and that it has taken substantial measures to protect the privacy of its users.

Pedophile Serving Life in Prison Who Escaped From Nakuru Level 5 Hospital Rearrested

Police attached to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have re-arrested Stanley Cheruiyot, a notorious criminal who escaped from a hospital in Nakuru.

Stanley Cheruiyot, convicted on defilement charges, escaped from Nakuru Level 5 Hospital while awaiting surgery for a dislocated arm.

In a statement on June 4, DCI confirmed the arrest, and expressed gratitude to Molo residents who assisted in the operation.

“A man convicted of defilement and serving a life sentence at the Nakuru GK prison is back to his dreaded home just a day after a daring escape, thanks to Molo town dwellers who gave him away like an offering,” the statement read.

According to DCI, members of the public were alarmed by a man who appeared suspicious.

They were particularly concerned because he had handcuffs but did not look like an officer.

“But Cheruiyot’s taste of liberty was short-lived as he was arrested later in the evening at Keep left area of Molo in Nakuru County, after members of the public sighted a man who by no means looked like a police officer with a pair of handcuffs tucked at the waist, 3 o’clock position,” DCI said.

Upon receiving a tip- off from the public, law enforcement officers took immediate action.

The 29-year-old has since been returned to the prison where he awaits arraignment on charges of escaping from lawful custody.

“On getting the information, officers from Molo Sub-County swiftly arrested the suspect, and from him recovered the cuffs, an itel phone (mulika mwizi) a pair of inmates’ uniform and the County hospital records from his backpack,” the statement read.

Stanley Cheruiyot was serving a life sentence at Nakuru GK Prison on defilement charges.

However, he escaped from Nakuru level five hospital on the morning of Monday June 3, 2024 while being processed for surgery.

Kanye West Responds To Sexual Harassment Lawsuit from Ex-Assistant

Kanye West is embroiled in a legal battle with his former personal assistant, Lauren Pisciotta, who filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against him in June 2024.

Pisciotta also alleged wrongful termination and breach of contract in her lawsuit.

West vehemently denied the sexual harassment claims, calling them “baseless.”

He countersued Pisciotta for blackmail and extortion, accusing her of making false accusations in an attempt to coerce him into giving her money or other benefits.

‘In response to these baseless allegations, Ye will be filing a lawsuit against Ms. Pisciotta, who actively pursued him sexually to coerce employment and other material benefits, then engaged in blackmail and extortion when her advances were rejected.’

Conflicting Claims Emerge
West’s representatives allege that Pisciotta was fired due to unprofessional conduct and demanding an exorbitant salary.

They also claim she tried to extort West after her advances were rejected.

‘It is evident that Ms. Pisciotta leveraged her association with Ye and his company,’ the rep continued.

‘And her proximity to him, to seek material gains, clout, and employment through inappropriate means,’ his teamed said, further claiming that Lauren has not been truthful in terms of her claims.
Pisciotta, on the other hand, maintains her claims of sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

The lawsuit’s outcome remains to be seen as it progresses through the legal system.

US State To Allow Castration Of Child Molesters

Louisiana judges could order surgical castration for people convicted of sex crimes against young children under legislation approved Monday, and if Republican Gov. Jeff Landry signs it into law, the state apparently would be the first with such a punishment.

The GOP-controlled Legislature passed the bill giving judges the option to sentence someone to surgical castration after the person has been convicted of certain aggravated sex crimes — including rape, incest and molestation — against a child under 13.

A handful of states — including California, Florida and Texas — have laws in place allowing for chemical castration. In some of those states, offenders can opt for the surgical procedure if they prefer. Bu the National Conference of State Legislatures said it is unaware of any states that allow judges to impose surgical castration.

For more than 16 years, judges in Louisiana have been allowed to order those convicted of such crimes to receive chemical castration, though that punishment is rarely issued. Chemical castration uses medications that block testosterone production to decrease sex drive. Surgical castration is a much more invasive procedure.

“This is a consequence,” Republican state Sen. Valarie Hodges said during a committee hearing on the bill in April. “It’s a step over and beyond just going to jail and getting out.”

The bill received overwhelming approval in both of the GOP-dominated chambers. Votes against the bill mainly came from Democrats. However a Democratic lawmaker — state Sen. Regina Barrow — authored the legislation.

Currently, there are 2,224 people imprisoned in Louisiana for sex crimes against children younger than 13. If the bill becomes law, it can only be applied to those who have convicted a crime that occurred on or after Aug. 1 of this year.

Barrow has said it would be an extra step in punishment for horrific crimes. She hopes the legislation will serve as a deterrent.

“We are talking about babies who are being violated by somebody,” Barrow said during an April committee meeting. “That is inexcusable.”

While castration is often associated with men, Barrow said the law could be applied to women. She also stressed that imposing the punishment would be by individual cases and at the discretion of judges. The punishment is not automatic.

If an offender “fails to appear or refuses to undergo” surgical castration after a judge orders the procedure, they could be hit with “failure to comply” charge and face an additional three to five years in prison, based on the bill’s language.

The legislation also stipulates that a medical expert must “determine whether that offender is an appropriate candidate” for the procedure before it’s carried out.

Louisiana’s current chemical castration law has been in place since 2008 but officials said from 2010 to 2019, they could only find one or two cases where it was used.

The bill, and chemical castration bills, have received pushback, with opponents saying it is “cruel and unusual punishment” and questioned the effectiveness of the procedure. Additionally some Louisiana lawmakers have questioned if the punishment was too harsh for someone who may have a single offense.

Elon Musk’s X updates policies to formally allow adult content

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has updated its policies to formally allow adult content.

Under the updated guidelines, the platform formerly known as Twitter will allow users to share sexualised content so long as it is consensual and clearly labelled.

The revised policy, which was updated over the weekend, states that “users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed”.

“Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression,” it says.

“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.”

Exposure to graphic material will be restricted for children and adult users who choose not to see it, and users will not be allowed to share content “promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviours”, according to the policy.

The change, first reported by TechCrunch, formalises a relatively tolerant attitude towards adult content that pre-dates Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October 2022.

Unlike platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, Twitter has never expressly banned nudity and sexualised content.

Under Musk’s tenure, X has dramatically scaled back moderation on the platform and reinstated previously banned accounts, including those of former United States President Donald Trump and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Musk has argued that he is upholding freedom of speech, but critics have accused the Tesla CEO of encouraging hate speech and misinformation.

Pochettino highlights Chelsea’s ‘big improvement’ on his watch

Mauricio Pochettino said Chelsea had shown a “big improvement” during his single season as manager in his first public comments since his Stamford Bridge exit.

The Argentine left the club by mutual consent last month despite a strong end to a turbulent season in which they spent much of the campaign languishing in mid-table in the Premier League.

The Blues won their final five games to finish sixth and earn a place in the Uefa Conference League, also reaching the final of the League Cup and the semifinals of the FA Cup.

On Monday, Chelsea appointed Leicester boss Enzo Maresca as Pochettino’s successor on a five-year deal.

Addressing the club’s ownership and supporters via social media, Pochettino, 52, he said he had worked hard to “give you a Chelsea you can be proud of”.

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss said the team had progressed after finishing a lowly 12th in the Premier League in the 2022/23 season.

“I am so pleased with the level the team reached and the way the players and staff have all worked so hard to increase their standards, they deserve great credit and I hope you felt that too in how they performed on the pitch,” Pochettino said in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“We know there have been ups and downs but we always believed in this team and that we would arrive at a consistent level.

“I believe the experiences of this season and big improvement we saw, I hope will only make the players stronger for the future. It has been a pleasure to work with them all and we appreciate the strong bonds we created in this last year together.”

Pochettino said he would return to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for the annual Soccer Aid celebrity charity match to raise funds for UNICEF, where he will manage a World XI against an England team.

Inter CEO Marotta takes over as club president

Inter Milan’s sporting CEO Giuseppe Marotta will take over as the Serie A champions’ new president on Tuesday after being put forward by the Italian club’s new US owners Oaktree.

Marotta, considered the architect of Inter’s recent return to football’s top table, will replace outgoing president Steven Zhang following a shareholders’ meeting in Milan later Tuesday, in which a new board will also be appointed.

Oaktree took control of Inter last month, days after the club were officially crowned kings of Italy for a 20th time, when previous owners Suning failed to repay a three-year loan which matured at 395 million euros ($428 million).

“I would like to thank Oaktree for the trust they have shown in giving me this opportunity to work alongside them and the Board,” said Marotta in a statement.

“This appointment is an acknowledgement of the fantastic work of the many people who have run the Club over the last three years.”

Marotta joined Inter in 2018 as head of football operations under Suning and Zhang.

Since then, Inter have won two Serie A titles, two Italian Cups, three Italian Super Cups and reached the final of both the Champions League and Europa League.

The 67-year-old was previously CEO at Juventus for a trophy-laden eight years.
