ODM Official Clarifies Delegates Getting Paid Ksh25,000 Each to Attend NDC

Orange Democratic Movemebt (ODM) communication director Philip Etale has dismissed reports that the Orange’s party paid the delegates who attended the Special Delegates Convention (SDC) on Friday, March 27.

The convention held at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi was the first one since the death of the party’s founding and longstanding leader, Raila Odinga.

On Sunday, March 29, a local newspaper claimed that ODM splurged millions to motivate crowds to grace the event.

According to the newspaper, the delegates, which it placed at 6,000, were sourced from as a far from Nyanza, with each getting at least Ksh25,000.

However, seeking to set the record straight, Etale denied the assertion that delegates were paid.

To begin with, he said, the delegates did not exceed 3,000 as per the constitution of the party, suggesting that the 6,000 thrown around by the newspaper was a conjecture.

“Even the party constitution is very clear… delegates to the NDC must not exceed 3,000. Where the Standard Newspaper is getting the over 6,000 figure confirms the worst fears that it has fast slid into gutter media…” he said.

ODM delegates during the Special Delegates Convention (SDC) on March 27.

On the delegates being motivated with monies, Etale challenged the publication to produce evidence that the attendees of the SDC were paid.

He said ODM did not spend at least Ksh100 million as argued by the newspaper, adding that no one was paid.

Etale referenced previous NDCs and other undertakings of such magnitudes which he said never cost much.

“ODM has held NDCs before and none has cost the party this amount of money. A script to make the party look like it belongs to Luo is at play. No delegate from Nyanza was paid Kes. 25,000 as the tabloid claims, and if there’s any, let the writer produce them. Propaganda can’t make a newspaper appealing and attractive, objectivity and integrity will,” he said.

Meanwhile, the SDC amplified the factionalism within ODM, as the faction of rebels held their parallel meeting at Ufungamano House on the same day.

The faction, which has vowed to dissent from party leader comprises, among others, Siaya governor James Orengo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Vihiga’s Godfrey Osotsi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.

They accuse President William Ruto of presiding over corruption, abductions, extrajudicial killings, incompetence, and undermining devolution, while also attempting to seize control of ODM after Raila Odinga’s death.

Their rivals, loyal to Oburu, and supportive of Ruto’s re-election, include, among others, governors Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Abdulswamad Nassir (Mombasa) and Simba Arati (Kisii), and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.

Each side is trading accusations of being manipulated by either Ruto or former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Man Behind ‘Niko Kadi’ Mass Registration Campaign Alleges Gov’t Threats

Allan Ademba, the individual behind the viral ‘Niko Kadi’ mass registration campaign, has claimed he is facing intimidation from state agencies.

In an update on Saturday, March 28, he indicated that the situation has escalated to the point where he has had to take precautionary measures to protect himself.

Ademba explained that state systems are actively being used against him and that he has been forced to change his communication methods as a result.

“State machinery is working overtime. I had to buy a Kabambe (a basic/feature phone). If you know, you know,” he claimed.

Ademba further suggested that there have been specific days marked by heightened pressure or troubling incidents but stopped short of disclosing full details.

“There are other things I could say here, but it would be bad but just know that the 19th and the 27th were bad days,” he added.

This comes a week after Ademba dismissed claims that the movement is backed by political sponsors or hidden financiers.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday, March 22, Ademba Allans framed the campaign’s “sponsorship” as symbolic of public frustrations and national concerns rather than financial backing.

“We are sponsored by Kenyans, we are sponsored by those who died in 2024, we are sponsored by the 1.3 trillion that was stolen the other day, we are sponsored by 43 million that was stolen from eCitizen. We are sponsored by the fact that RutoMustGo,” he said.

Ademba explained that the initiative is focused on mobilizing citizens to register as voters, distancing the campaign from political influence and rejecting any form of external funding tied to politicians.

He criticized political leaders for what he described as a failure to encourage voter registration in the past, arguing that the current effort is filling that gap independently.

“To any politician out there, claiming or wanting to work with us, we have to say this: You had the longest time to mobilize Kenyans to register as voters, and you failed to do that. We are mobilizing Kenyans to register to vote; we do not want you anywhere in the picture.

“For now, don’t ruin this, don’t interrupt our process. This is not a politician-led mass voter registration; this is a citizen-led mass voter registration. We don’t have the money, but we don’t want your money,” he added.

Ademba further revealed that there have been attempts by political figures to associate themselves with the campaign, including alleged offers of logistical support.

However, he warned that any attempts to infiltrate or take over the movement would be met with resistance from organizers.

“They have approached us. I have been receiving phone calls. If a lorry appears on Tuesday at our rallies in Kibra, Langatta, the 5 Embakasi constituencies, at anniversary towers, we are going to chase those lorries away. We are not going to allow politicians to hijack,” he further said.

Elsewhere, President William Ruto has conveyed his condolences after 15 people died in a grisly accident along the Nyeri-Nyahururu highway.

In a statement on Saturday, March 28 evening, he expressed sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones in the accident.

Ruto also wished a quick recovery to those who were injured in the gruesome accident.

“Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” he said.

At the same time, Ruto said the national government is working with the Nyeri County government to engage the affected families and offer assistance during the difficult period.

“The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support during this difficult time,” he added.

The tragic accident occurred near the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and involved a 14-seater matatu and a truck ferrying logs.

The matatu was heading towards Mweiga from Nyeri town while the lorry was moving in the opposite direction.

Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the lorry was trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle when the lorry collided with the matatu head-on.

Four passengers died on the spot, while 11 others were confirmed dead after being rushed to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

Several others who sustained injuries in the accident were admitted to various hospitals in Nyeri County.

Millicent Omanga Explains Why She Fell Out With President Ruto

Former Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has revealed she fell out with President William Ruto over what she described as betrayal.

Speaking on Saturday, March 28, Omanga claimed that the President failed to honour commitments he made to women ahead of the 2022 General Election.

She noted that President Ruto signed a women’s charter and pledged a 50:50 gender balance in government appointments, a promise she says is yet to be fulfilled.

Omanga also highlighted other unimplemented pledges, including the provision of free sanitary towels to girls in public schools and free diapers for women delivering in public hospitals.

“We had a women’s charter, during the charter, I was at the forefront, the current president signed and agreed that it will be 50:50 gender sharing in his government, not even two-thirds. He signed again that every girl in public schools would get free sanitary towels, something which we are not seeing now.

“Another thing is that women delivering in public hospitals would get free diapers. He removed Linda mama, which was there during Uhuru’s time. We came to realise whatever we signed was just for election purposes,” Omanga stated.

The former Nominated Senator also said she declined the appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Commission board, saying it went against her principles.

“I looked at the mandate of that commission, and one of them was to demolish markets and houses next to the riverbank. I looked at the people who voted for me, and 40 per cent of them live around there. I decided I can’t stand that,” Omanga explained.

This comes days after Omanga officially joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Omanga was received at the party by Gachagua during an event at the party headquarters on Thursday, March 19.

Speaking during the event, Gachagua said Omanga is a leader of high integrity who cares about the livelihood of Nairobi residents.

“Does Millicent Omanga look like somebody who can be bought? No one elected under the DCP ticket will be bought after the election,” he reiterated.

On her part, the former nominated Senator asked for an apology from the people of Nairobi for supporting President Ruto, who broke all the promises he made to them.

“I am asking for your forgiveness for thinking that the UDA wheelbarrow was going somewhere, but I was wrong. He lied to all of us,” she stated.

Looksmaxxing influencer Clavicular arrested on battery charge in Florida

A controversial internet streamer who goes by the name Clavicular has been arrested in south Florida on a battery charge.

Braden Eric Peters was taken into custody on Thursday by police in Fort Lauderdale after a battery investigation stemming from an incident last month in central Florida, investigators said.

Peters is accused of instigating a fight between two women and then posting a video of it on social media, authorities said. The BBC has contacted Peters for comment.

Clavicular is primarily known for his role in an online movement called looksmaxxing, centred on maximising physical attractiveness.

A 19-year-old woman reported that she had been battered by Violet Marie Lentz, 24, on 2 February during a physical altercation in a residence rented out by Peters, 20, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies arrived at the home but Peters and Lentz would not meet them outside to speak about the incident.

A warrant was issued by the sheriff’s office for Peters for charges of misdemeanour battery and criminal conspiracy to commit battery.

A warrant was also issued for Lentz for misdemeanour battery. Authorities are still searching for her, the sheriff’s office said.
