KeNHA Arrests Suspect for Vandalizing Reinforcement Bars Along Miritini-Kipevu Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) arrested a suspect caught vandalizing reinforcement bars along the Miritini-Kipevu road.

The arrest was made by the Axle Load Enforcement and Highway Unit (ALEHU) in Mombasa.

According to KeNHA, the suspect was found in possession of a mason’s hammer and had previously been arrested for a similar offense in 2024. At the time, he was sentenced to six months of community service. Currently, he is being held at Changamwe Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

KeNHA has urged the public to safeguard road infrastructure and report any acts of vandalism to authorities. The agency emphasized the critical role of reinforcement bars, commonly known as rebar, in ensuring the strength and durability of roads and bridges.

Reinforcement bars are steel bars or mesh used to enhance concrete structures. Concrete is strong under compression but weak under tension, making rebar essential in preventing cracks and structural failure. The bars are arranged in a grid pattern within the concrete to distribute loads and resist stress.

Different types of rebar are used in road construction, including epoxy-coated rebar for moisture-prone areas, stainless steel rebar for high-humidity regions, and galvanized rebar, which resists corrosion. These materials ensure roads withstand heavy traffic and harsh environmental conditions.

KeNHA has reiterated its commitment to protecting road infrastructure and called on Kenyans to report any suspicious activities that threaten the country’s transport network.

Maraga: Iam Not A State Project

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced that he will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election, setting the stage for a political showdown.

Speaking after a church service in Kisii, Maraga declared his readiness to take up the top job, emphasizing that his candidacy is not influenced by external forces.

“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait, and in due course, you will make up your mind whether or not I’m a state project,” Maraga stated.

His entry into the race comes amid discussions within the Kisii political landscape, where Senator Richard Onyonka and other leaders have endorsed former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as the region’s preferred candidate.

“We have decided to set up our own political party. Our candidate, who will negotiate on behalf of the community, is none other than Fred Matiang’i,” Onyonka declared.

Maraga, however, appears to have gained support from Gen Z, who have urged him to run. Speaking after a public lecture at Rongo University, he revealed ongoing consultations with stakeholders.

Why ‘Gen Z’ Want David Maraga for President

Former Chief Justice David Maraga’s entry into the 2027 presidential race has sparked excitement, particularly among Kenya’s Gen Z.

Though he lacks traditional political experience, his tenure as Chief Justice (2016-2021) showcased bold leadership, integrity, and a commitment to justice—qualities that resonate with a generation eager for change.

Maraga is best remembered for his historic annulment of the 2017 presidential election, proving he could stand up to powerful political forces.

His unwavering stance on judicial independence and anti-corruption efforts has earned him admiration from young Kenyans frustrated by years of government mismanagement.

Gen Z, disillusioned with traditional politicians, sees Maraga as a fresh, principled alternative who isn’t part of Kenya’s old political elite. His strong moral values, reinforced by his Christian faith, make him stand out in a political landscape tainted by scandals.

However, transitioning from the Judiciary to politics won’t be easy. Maraga will need to build political alliances, mobilize grassroots support, and craft a compelling campaign strategy to take on established figures like President Ruto and opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Somalia Gives U.S. Exclusive Control Over Key Military Bases and Ports

Somalia is prepared to grant the United States exclusive control over key air bases and ports, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated in a letter to President Donald Trump on March 16, as seen by Reuters.

The proposed assets include the Balidogle and Berbera air bases as well as the ports of Berbera and Bosaso.

The move, if accepted, would strengthen the U.S. military presence in the Horn of Africa, offering strategic advantages in countering Islamist militant threats in Somalia and the broader region.

“These strategically positioned assets provide an opportunity to bolster American engagement in the region, ensuring uninterrupted military and logistical access while preventing external competitors from establishing a presence in this critical corridor,” the letter read.

However, the offer has sparked tensions with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region where the Berbera air base and port are located. Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aden dismissed Somalia’s proposal, emphasizing that the U.S. would deal directly with Somaliland instead.

“The USA gave up this corrupted regime called Somalia. The USA is now ready to deal with Somaliland, who has shown the world to be a peaceful, stable, and democratic nation,” Aden told Reuters.

The Balidogle air base, located 90 km northwest of Mogadishu, and Bosaso port in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland are also part of the deal. The Somali government has yet to provide an official response regarding potential diplomatic fallout.

WSL: Beth Mead Shines as Arsenal Dominate Crystal Palace

Beth Mead scored her 50th and 51st Women’s Super League goals for Arsenal as they cruised to victory against relegation strugglers Crystal Palace.

Mead slotted a first-time volley into the bottom corner to put the Gunners in front after Chloe Kelly’s whipped ball into the box.

Alessia Russo doubled the lead when she latched on to Mariona Caldentey’s through ball and fired home.

Kelly’s cross towards goal in the 77th minute was turned into her own net by Palace captain Allyson Swaby, before Mead found the top corner in stoppage time to complete the victory.

Palace striker Katie Stengel fired a shot high over the bar from close range in a rare chance for the hosts.

After a superb performance midweek in beating Real Madrid to seal their place in the Champions League semi-finals, Arsenal carried that momentum into this match and overcame Palace with ease.

The result means Arsenal are six points behind WSL leaders Chelsea who drew with West Ham, while Palace remain rooted to the foot of the table.

Kelly stars for free-scoring Gunners

England international Kelly was hugely influential in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real Madrid at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, providing two assists and putting a host of dangerous crosses into the box.

The Manchester City loanee, who rejoined the club on deadline day, started for the third consecutive match and proved her worth once again, setting up Mead’s goal with yet another wicked delivery.

Another cross was diverted into the net by Swaby as Kelly proved too much for the opposition to handle.

Arsenal have been in superb league form with their last defeat coming against rivals Chelsea at the end of January.

Following that setback, they have won six WSL matches in a row for the first time since December 2023 under Jonas Eidevall, when they won seven.

The Gunners have also netted 24 goals in their past six games, highlighting their consistent attacking threat.

They will be full of confidence for their next match on 19 April, when they host Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Man City Advance To FA Cup Semi Final; Keep Cup Hopes Alive

Manchester City kept their trophy hopes for this season alive by coming from behind at Bournemouth to set up an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Evanilson’s scrambled 21st-minute finish put the Cherries ahead at half-time and left City boss Pep Guardiola facing the prospect of ending a campaign empty-handed for the first time since 2016-17, his debut season at the club.

Erling Haaland had a first-half penalty saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga and wasted two other golden opportunities as City struggled for rhythm in the face of Bournemouth’s intensity.

But Guardiola worked his magic at the break by sending on Nico O’Reilly for Abdukodir Khusanov, and four minutes into the second half the 20-year-old – operating at left-back – created the equaliser with a perfect cross for Haaland to turn in at the far post.

Another change, this time enforced, allowed City to go ahead after 63 minutes. O’Reilly played in Omar Marmoush, just on for the injured Haaland, and the Egypt attacker’s strike crept under Kepa who should have done better.

Trump’s 25% Auto Tariff to Hit Working-Class Buyers Hardest

U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly announced 25% tariff on imported vehicles is expected to have a disproportionate impact on working-class car buyers, as most low-cost new cars sold in America are manufactured overseas.

With the average new car price nearing $50,000, lower-income buyers rely on the few remaining vehicles under $30,000—most of which are produced in Mexico, South Korea, or Japan.

A Reuters review found only one model in this price range, the Toyota Corolla, assembled in the U.S. Industry analysts warn that the tariff will either drive up prices beyond affordability or push automakers to abandon these models altogether.

“New vehicles across the board are going to be more expensive,” said Sam Fiorani of AutoForecast Solutions. “That’s going to push more buyers into the used market, which will also raise the price of used vehicles.”

This shift will hurt Trump’s own voter base, particularly rural Americans and lower-income households, who heavily supported him in the 2024 election. Many foreign-made cars, including those from American automakers like GM, could see significant price hikes.

Despite concerns, Trump remains unmoved. “If the prices on foreign cars go up, they’re going to buy American cars,” he told NBC News.

However, with many American brands also producing abroad, consumers may have fewer affordable options, forcing many to turn to an increasingly expensive used car market.

Trump Threatens To Bomb Iran Over Nuclear Standoff

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on Sunday, threatening military action and economic sanctions if Tehran refuses to negotiate on its nuclear program.

Speaking in an NBC News interview, Trump declared that if Iran does not reach an agreement with Washington, “there will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before.”

His remarks follow Iran’s rejection of direct negotiations with the U.S. last week.

Instead, Iranian officials confirmed that indirect discussions are ongoing, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei allowing diplomatic exchanges through intermediaries.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that Tehran would not engage in direct talks while facing Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign.

Trump also floated the possibility of reintroducing secondary tariffs, similar to those imposed during his first term.

These penalties would target countries and entities that conduct business with Iran, further isolating the nation economically. The president hinted that similar measures could be applied to Russia and Venezuela.

In 2018, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, reimposing severe sanctions. Since then, Iran has significantly expanded its uranium enrichment program, raising concerns among Western nations that Tehran could be advancing toward nuclear weapons capability—a charge Iran denies, insisting its nuclear ambitions are purely civilian.

Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Crosses 1,700

The death toll from Myanmar’s devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake has surged to approximately 1,700, with more than 3,400 injured and over 300 still missing, as rescue operations intensify across the war-torn nation.

The quake, one of Myanmar’s strongest in a century, struck on Friday, leaving behind widespread destruction and overwhelming hospitals in affected regions.

The country’s military government, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has warned that fatalities could continue to rise as search efforts progress.

The disaster comes amid ongoing civil unrest following the 2021 military coup, which has crippled Myanmar’s infrastructure and health system.

In response to the crisis, international aid has begun pouring in, with India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia sending relief supplies and emergency teams.

The United States has pledged $2 million in humanitarian assistance, with a USAID response team en route.

However, damaged bridges, highways, and railways have slowed relief efforts, while reports indicate that some of the hardest-hit communities remain without government support.

“The destruction has been extensive, and humanitarian needs are growing by the hour,” the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said in a statement.

Hospitals in cities like Mandalay and Naypyitaw are struggling to cope with the influx of injured survivors.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Service predicts the final death toll could exceed 10,000, with economic losses surpassing Myanmar’s annual GDP.

Sudan’s RSF Vows Retaliation After Losing Khartoum

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the leader of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has vowed to retake Khartoum, despite recent losses to the Sudanese army.

In his first public remarks since RSF forces withdrew from much of the capital last week, Dagalo—commonly known as Hemedti—said the retreat was a “tactical decision” and promised a comeback.

“We will return to Khartoum stronger, more powerful, and victorious,” he declared in an audio message on Telegram.

The army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been consolidating its control over the capital region, recently capturing a key market in Omdurman that RSF forces had used for attacks.

The military already dominates much of Omdurman, which, along with Khartoum and Bahri, forms the heart of the war-torn capital area.

Burhan has ruled out any reconciliation with the RSF, vowing to crush the paramilitary group. The conflict, which erupted from a power struggle between the two factions, has devastated Sudan, displacing over 12 million people and pushing half of the country’s 50 million citizens into acute hunger.

A study last year estimated that the war may have killed 61,000 people in Khartoum state alone during its first 14 months. As fighting intensifies, Sudan’s humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with no resolution in sight.

Lewandowski Fires Barcelona Past Girona to Strengthen LaLiga Lead

Robert Lewandowski’s brilliance propelled Barcelona to a commanding 4-1 victory over Girona, restoring their three-point lead at the top of LaLiga.

The Polish striker netted twice, keeping him on course for both the league title and the Pichichi Trophy.

Barcelona dominated from the outset at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, creating multiple early chances. Fermin Lopez saw an effort blocked before Lewandowski tested Girona’s goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The visitors survived a VAR check for a possible penalty but couldn’t hold on until halftime. Yangel Herrera’s foul led to a free kick, which Ladislav Krejci converted following a flicked header by Lamine Yamal.

Girona briefly hit back after the break when Daley Blind capitalized on a Barcelona error, setting up Arnaut Danjuma, who finished clinically past Marc-André ter Stegen. However, the response from Xavi’s men was swift.

Lopez turned provider in the 61st minute, heading across goal for Lewandowski, who rose high to nod home his 24th league goal.

Moments later, Frenkie de Jong released the Polish striker on the left, and he finished coolly into the far corner. Ferran Torres completed the rout, converting a well-placed Gerard Martin pass.

Barcelona now look primed for a 28th LaLiga title, while Girona, winless in eight of their last eleven away matches, must regroup. With Lewandowski firing on all cylinders, the Catalan giants are in firm control of their destiny.
