Shabana Thrash Murang’a Seal as Kenya Police, Tusker Maintain Title Charge

Shabana FC extended their impressive home form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Murang’a Seal at Gusii Stadium.

Ezekiel Omuri opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to give Tore Bobe a first-half lead.

The Glamour Boys then sealed the win early in the second half as Austine Odongo struck twice in quick succession, netting in the 46th and 56th minutes to secure their ninth victory of the campaign.

Meanwhile, league leaders Kenya Police maintained their position at the summit with a narrow 1-0 win.

Harambee Stars youngster Mohammed Bajaber delivered the decisive goal in the second half, ensuring the law enforcers stayed in control of the 16-team table.

At Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Tusker FC edged past Bidco United with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

The game remained goalless until the 70th minute when Deogratious Ojok fired home a stunning strike from outside the box.

Despite Bidco being reduced to 10 men after Jacob Onyango saw red, the Brewers couldn’t add to their tally but held on for maximum points.

Elsewhere, Bandari secured a 2-1 win over Ulinzi Stars at Mbaraki Sports Club, while Kariobangi Sharks picked up a crucial point in their relegation fight with a 0-0 draw against Nairobi City Stars.

Mashemeji Derby Barren: Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards Draw

Kenyan football giants AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia played out a lackluster 0-0 draw in the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

Despite the pre-match hype, neither side managed to find the back of the net, with Gor Mahia feeling the biggest impact as they missed a chance to close the gap on league leaders Kenya Police FC and Tusker.

Ingwe coach Fred Ambani set up an attacking lineup, but his side struggled to break down a resilient Gor Mahia defense. Meanwhile, K’Ogalo’s Serbian tactician, Sinisa Mihic, opted to bench key midfielder Austin Odhiambo, a decision that saw his side struggle to convert their dominance into goals.

Gor Mahia had the better chances, with Musa Sheriff and Ghanaian import Morrison Enoch both spurning golden opportunities in the first half. AFC Leopards, on the other hand, came closest through Ovella Ochieng, whose shot sailed over the bar.

Both sides made tactical substitutions in the second half, but the game remained a cagey affair, ending in a goalless draw in front of a packed stadium.

The result means Gor Mahia continue to trail the top teams, while AFC Leopards extended their unbeaten run but without the much-needed three points.

Welbeck’s FA Cup Heroics Earned Surprise Call from Sir Alex Ferguson

Danny Welbeck has revealed that legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson personally called him after his extra-time winner for Brighton in the FA Cup.

The 34-year-old striker secured Brighton’s place in the quarter-finals with a crucial goal against Newcastle earlier this month. Shortly after, he received an unexpected call from his former boss, despite Ferguson having retired from management over a decade ago.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Welbeck shared his surprise at the call. “It was a ‘No caller ID’ number, and sometimes I don’t even answer those,” he admitted. “But I picked up, and it was him. He was buzzing, talking about the goal and the performance. He’s always looked out for his players, even now.”

Welbeck, who rose through United’s academy, was a key figure in Ferguson’s final seasons before moving to Arsenal in 2014. Despite playing for various clubs since then, the striker remains in touch with the legendary manager.

Ferguson’s call highlights the lasting bond between the two, as well as the Scotsman’s enduring interest in his former players’ careers.

Welbeck continues to prove his worth in the Premier League, and with Brighton now set to face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter-finals, he may be hoping for another call from his old boss should he produce more magic in the competition.

Joe Hart: Rashford Awakening Was Long Overdue

Marcus Rashford ended his four-month goal drought in style, scoring twice to lead Aston Villa to a 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Preston North End at Deepdale.

The Manchester United loanee, who had not found the net since December 1, finally broke his barren spell in the 58th minute, tapping home a Lucas Digne cutback. Just five minutes later, he confidently converted a penalty after Morgan Rogers was fouled, sending Preston goalkeeper David Cornell the wrong way.

Jacob Ramsey sealed the win with a stunning third, booking Villa’s first FA Cup semi-final since 2015. They will now face in-form Crystal Palace at Wembley as they chase their first FA Cup title since 1957.

Speaking after the match, Rashford admitted the goals were a relief and credited Villa’s environment for helping him regain confidence.

“It’s a great feeling,” he told the BBC. “I’ve been getting fitter and playing better football since I’ve been here. It’s always nice for a forward to get a goal—hopefully, it continues.”

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart weighed in on Rashford’s resurgence, suggesting that the stability provided by Unai Emery has played a crucial role in his improvement.

“At United, there were always questions—where should he play? How should he be used?” Hart said. “At Villa, there are no doubts. He has a clear role, clear instructions, and he’s thriving.”

Hart also highlighted the difference in coaching approaches, emphasizing Emery’s ability to bring out the best in his players.

“Unai Emery isn’t questioned in the media because he’s established himself. Rashford is in a team that believes in him, and that’s making the difference.”

With Rashford rediscovering his form, Villa fans will hope he can fire them all the way to FA Cup glory.

Chinese Firms to Impose Rail Toll on Malaba SGR Extension

The Kenyan government has confirmed that a consortium of Chinese firms will finance and operate the final 40 percent of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension from Naivasha to Malaba, imposing a toll for usage to recoup their investment.

Speaking before the Budget and Appropriations Committee (BAC), Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi stated that discussions with Beijing-based firms are ongoing to finalize funding for this critical phase. The project aims to complete Kenya’s modern railway network, eventually linking Mombasa to Uganda and beyond.

“We are negotiating with Chinese companies to fund the last leg of the SGR,” Mbadi stated. “The financing structure will see 30 percent sourced externally, another 30 percent (or Sh45 billion annually) funded by the government, while the remaining 40 percent will be covered by Chinese firms through a toll system.”

The SGR project, launched in 2013, is one of Kenya’s largest infrastructure investments, costing $3.6 billion for the Mombasa-Nairobi stretch alone. The new extension will traverse Narok, Bomet, Kericho, and Kisumu, with provisions for modifications at Kisumu Port to enhance regional trade.

The government has already begun mapping out settlements and assets along the 255-kilometre route to facilitate compensation and resettlement. The plan also includes two multipurpose berths at Kisumu Port, designed to accommodate larger cargo vessels.

Both Kenya and Uganda remain keen on extending the railway into Kampala, Rwanda, and DR Congo, solidifying the SGR as a key regional trade corridor.

With a completion timeline yet to be disclosed, the project’s financing model signals a strategic shift towards private investment in Kenya’s infrastructure development.

Thieving Househelp Arrested Over Theft Of Sh2.2 Million

A 29-year-old househelp who staged a daring heist, vanishing with her employer’s Sh2.2 million, has finally been nabbed after an intense manhunt.

Fleviar Muhonja Anaya pulled off the betrayal on March 16, 2025, when she was left alone at her employer’s home.

Hours later, a security guard noticed her sneaking out with a large carrier bag. When questioned, she casually claimed she was running an errand for her boss.

Suspicions arose when the employer tried to call her, only to find her phone switched off. Rushing back home, she was met with the horrifying discovery—her cash stash had vanished along with the seemingly trustworthy maid.

Detectives from DCI Nairobi, alongside the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, launched a countrywide search. Their efforts bore fruit when they tracked Muhonja down in Malava, Kakamega County.

Under interrogation, the runaway househelp led officers to Kapsoi, Vihiga County, where Sh700,000 was recovered from her grandmother’s house.

The operation continued to Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, where detectives found expensive chain links purchased with the stolen loot. Another Sh800,000 was later retrieved from her rented house in South B, Nairobi.

Fleviar is in police custody and is set to be arraigned in court

Aston Villa to Face Crystal Palace in FA Cup Semi-Finals

Aston Villa have secured a place in the FA Cup semi-finals after a dominant 3-0 victory over Preston North End.

Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, scored twice to help Villa ease past their Championship opponents at Deepdale. Jacob Ramsey added a stunning third, sealing Villa’s first semi-final appearance since 2015.

Unai Emery’s men now face a tough test against Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium.

Palace, who thrashed Fulham 3-0 in their quarter-final clash, are in red-hot form, having won five consecutive matches across all competitions. The Eagles have also recorded six straight away victories for the first time in their history.

Villa will be wary of their upcoming opponents, having suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Palace in the Premier League last month.

Ismaila Sarr, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Eddie Nketiah were on target in that game, showing the attacking threat that Palace will bring to Wembley.

In the other semi-final, Nottingham Forest will face either Bournemouth or Manchester City, who meet in the last quarter-final tie.

Forest progressed after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Brighton, marking their third straight FA Cup victory on penalties. They have now reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1991.

City, the competition’s seven-time winners, will look to avoid an upset against Bournemouth to book their Wembley spot.

The semi-finals will take place on April 26 and 27, with the final scheduled for May 17.

Pope Francis: Lent Is a ‘Time of Healing’

Pope Francis, who is recovering from a life-threatening bout of pneumonia, urged Catholics Sunday to mark Lent as a “time of healing” as he missed his seventh consecutive Angelus prayer.

The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church left Rome’s Gemelli hospital last Sunday after five weeks of treatment, returning to the Vatican for what his doctors said would be at least two months of convalescence.

Francis was again absent for this weekend’s Angelus, normally delivered at midday on Sunday from a window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St Peter’s Square

The Vatican published the text instead, as it has since his hospitalisation on February 14.

“Dearest friends, let us live this Lent as a time of healing,” Francis wrote, referring to 40 days before Easter, the holiest period in the Christian calendar. Easter Sunday this year falls on April 20.

“I too am experiencing it this way, in my soul and in my body.”

He added: “Frailty and illness are experiences we all have in common; all the more, however, we are brothers in the salvation Christ has given us.”

The Vatican said Friday the pope was showing “slight improvements”, with his voice — strained and weak following his double pneumonia — reported to be stronger.

Doctors said Francis almost died twice during his hospitalisation, the longest and most fraught of his 12 years as head of the Church.

– ‘He is alive’ –

Millions of Catholics are visiting Rome and the Vatican for the 2025 papal Jubilee, a year of religious celebrations, and crowds gathered Sunday in St Peter’s Square despite the pope’s absence.

“It is not so important whether he shows himself or not. What is important is that he is alive,” Xuchitl Vazquez, a 71-year-old pilgrim from Mexico, told AFP.

“What is important is that he is aware of what is happening in the world and the world is aware of what is happening to him,” she added.

The pope on Sunday offered his prayers for conflicts including Ukraine, Israel and the Palestinian territories, and also for quake-hit Myanmar.

Francis said he was following “with concern” the situation in South Sudan, where there has been heightened confrontation in recent weeks between the rival factions that fought each other in the 2013-2018 civil war.

“I renew my heartfelt appeal to all leaders to do their utmost to lower the tension in the country,” he said, urging everyone to put aside their differences and engage in “constructive dialogue”.

Francis also urged new negotiations as soon as possible in war-torn Sudan, and urged the international community to boost efforts to address “the appalling humanitarian catastrophe”.

The leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics noted that “thanks be to God, there are also positive events”.

He described a recent border agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan — seen as key for the stability of Central Asia — as an “excellent diplomatic achievement”.

Taliban Leader: Western Laws Have No Place in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, declared on Sunday that Western laws have no place in Afghanistan, reaffirming the group’s strict adherence to Islamic governance.

Speaking at the Eidgah Mosque in Kandahar during a sermon for Eid al-Fitr, Akhundzada asserted that democracy is dead in Afghanistan, stating that sharia law is fully in effect.

The 50-minute audio recording of his speech was shared online by the Taliban’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

“There is no need for laws that originate from the West. We will create our own laws,” Akhundzada stated in Pashto, emphasizing Afghanistan’s commitment to Islamic jurisprudence.

Since the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, the group’s interpretation of sharia has led to the exclusion of women and girls from education and the workforce, as well as restrictions on their presence in public spaces.

These policies have isolated Afghanistan internationally, though the Taliban has established ties with countries such as China and the UAE.

Akhundzada also criticized the West, claiming that non-believers were united against Muslims, citing the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza as an example of Western hostility toward Islam.

Despite internal tensions within the Taliban’s leadership over engagement with the international community, the group has recently increased diplomatic interactions with the U.S. under President Donald Trump, particularly in prisoner exchanges.

However, the Taliban remains firmly opposed to Western-style governance, further deepening Afghanistan’s diplomatic isolation.

Royal Rift: Prince Harry Accused of ‘Bullying and Harassment’

The head of Sentebale, a charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, has made explosive claims about the Duke of Sussex, accusing him of bullying and harassment following his sudden resignation from the organization earlier this week.

A Relationship in Ruins

Dr Sophie Chandauka, chair of Sentebale, alleges that Harry’s actions—particularly his decision to announce his departure without informing her or the executive team first—have shattered the relationship between the 540 people working for the charity and their co-founder.

“At some point on Tuesday, Prince Harry authorised the release of a damaging piece of news to the outside world without informing me or my country directors,” Chandauka told Sky’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips.

“That is an example of harassment and bullying at scale.”

Harry and Seeiso resigned as patrons of Sentebale after a dispute with the charity’s trustees, stating their relationship had “broken down beyond repair”. However, Chandauka claims the real issue was Harry’s alleged attempts to remove her from the organization.

The “Sussex Machine” & Meghan’s Involvement

Dr Chandauka accused Harry of unleashing the “Sussex machine”—a reference to his and Meghan Markle’s PR operation—to undermine her leadership.

She also revealed tensions surrounding Meghan’s unexpected appearance at a Sentebale fundraising event in Miami. According to Chandauka:

  • Meghan had originally said she would not attend but showed up with a famous friend, creating an unexpected media storm.
  • The event’s choreography “went badly” due to Meghan’s last-minute arrival, leading to negative press coverage.
  • Afterward, Harry allegedly pressured Chandauka to release a statement in support of Meghan, but she refused, saying,

“We cannot be an extension of the Sussexes.”

Netflix Drama & A Toxic Brand

Chandauka further claims that a fundraising event collapsed after Harry decided—at the last minute—to film part of it for a Netflix documentary, violating prior agreements with the venue.

She also described Harry’s “toxic brand” as the “number one risk” to the charity, telling the Financial Times that his reputation had negatively impacted Sentebale.

Race, Power & a Shift in Leadership

Beyond the personal tensions, Chandauka suggested there were deeper cultural and structural conflicts at play.

She said her efforts to shift decision-making to Sentebale’s leaders in southern Africa were resisted by UK-based trustees who felt they were losing power and control.

“The organization’s form was no longer appropriate in 2023 in a post-Black Lives Matter world,” she argued.

“Funders were asking for locally-led initiatives, but the UK board felt, ‘Oh my goodness, the Africans are taking over.’”

A Royal Mess with No Easy Resolution

This high-profile fallout leaves Sentebale’s future uncertain, as Harry distances himself from the charity he co-founded in memory of Princess Diana and Seeiso’s mother.

With allegations of bullying, power struggles, and PR manipulation, the rift between Sentebale’s leadership and Prince Harry appears to be far from over.
