14-Year-Old Makes History as Vermont’s First Teen General Election Candidate for Governor

STOWE, Vt.

Looking back, gubernatorial candidate Dean Roy says his political ambitions started in the eighth grade. And by that, he means last year.

After serving as a legislative page at the Vermont Statehouse, the 14-year-old freshman at Stowe High School now has his sights set on the corner office. In November, he will become the first candidate for governor under 18 to appear on the state’s general election ballot.

“I don’t expect necessarily to win,” he said. “What I do expect is to start the movement, and get more young people to come in behind me and say, ‘Yeah, we also want to make change.'”

Roy secured his spot on the ballot by creating his own third party, the Freedom and Unity party. His candidacy is possible because the Vermont Constitution sets no minimum age for governor, requiring only that candidates have resided in the state for four years.

In 2018, another eighth-grader, Ethan Sonneborn, sought the Democratic nomination for governor but finished last in a four-way primary.

Roy, by contrast, will appear on the general election ballot—a first for a teenage gubernatorial candidate in Vermont.

Child Killed in Mwea–Embu Road Accident as Residents Demand Safety Measures

By Andrew Kariuki

Residents of Gathoge and Piai villages along the Mwea–Embu highway are calling for urgent government intervention following a surge in road accidents that have claimed the lives of school-going children.

The latest incident occurred on Friday night when a 13-year-old Grade 6 pupil from Kiaumbui Primary School was killed after being struck by a saloon car. Witnesses said the vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and hit the boy, killing him on the spot.

The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, prompting a police manhunt. The vehicle involved has since been towed to Wang’uru Police Station as investigations continue.

Local residents, led by James Waweru, Margaret Wandia, Wambui Muriithi, and Omari Kilonzo, expressed outrage over what they described as repeated tragedies at the same location.

They are now urging authorities to install speed bumps and implement other traffic calming measures to prevent further loss of life.

“Several people, including children, have died at this spot,” the residents said, calling for urgent action to improve road safety.

The incident has left the community in shock, with growing concerns over the safety of the highway, particularly for school children who rely on the road daily.

“LeBron Assists Bronny on 3-Pointer for NBA’s First Father-Son Scoring Play”

LOS ANGELES

LeBron James literally passed it on to the next generation Friday night.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer recorded the league’s first father-son assist when he found Bronny James for a 3-pointer in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

“That was a special moment for us two, and a lot more to come down the road,” Bronny said after the game.

The Lakers’ father-son duo played meaningful minutes together for the second straight game, checking in together to start the second quarter and sharing the court for nearly four and a half minutes.

Both made their mark during that stretch: LeBron drove for a layup before, on the next possession, he drew a double team and passed to Bronny, who knocked down a three from a step behind the arc.

“Not taking it for granted, just being in the moment of us being on the floor once again,” LeBron said.

“That’s two games back-to-back, playing meaningful minutes, and him also making another play. … I got doubled, and he was able to fake the pass to the corner and then knock down the 3. Definitely a cool moment for us, and also for the family.”

Chemical Smell Grounds Flights at Washington-Area Airports

WASHINGTON

Airports serving Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and parts of Virginia briefly halted flights Friday evening after federal authorities reported a strong chemical odor at the air traffic control facility that manages the region’s airspace.

The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily paused traffic at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Charlottesville–Albemarle Airport, and Richmond International Airport due to the smell at the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, according to a Department of Transportation spokesperson.

The Potomac TRACON is a key facility that handles incoming and outgoing air traffic for the region, according to the FAA website.

FAA spokeswoman Kristen Alsop said Friday that controllers were returning to their posts and that normal flight operations were expected to resume shortly.

In a post on the social platform X, Baltimore-Washington International Airport confirmed that the FAA’s ground stop had been lifted, though officials warned that “some residual flight delays can be expected this evening.”

Body of Naromoru Resident Found in River Thiba in Kirinyaga

By Andrew Kariuki

Residents of Ngurubani, Soweto and Thiba areas in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, were left in shock after the body of a man was discovered in River Thiba on Saturday morning.

The body, believed to be that of a man aged about 50, was found beneath a bridge along the Mwea–Embu highway by locals going about their daily activities.

Boda boda operators’ chairman in Mwea, Michael Kariua, alerted traffic police officers stationed near Ngurubani Primary School, who responded and secured the scene.

Residents have raised suspicions of foul play, noting that the body appeared clean and the deceased was well dressed, suggesting he may have been killed elsewhere before being dumped in the river.

The case took a significant turn after detectives answered a phone found on the deceased. The caller, who identified herself as the man’s wife, said she was calling from Naromoru in Nyeri County in search of her missing husband. Authorities later confirmed that the deceased was a resident of Naromoru.

“This is very disturbing. People are being killed and their bodies dumped in Kirinyaga,” said local businessman John Maina. “We are shocked and saddened and demand justice for the deceased and his family.”

Kariua also called for thorough investigations, urging police to establish what happened and bring those responsible to justice.

Another resident, Maina Simba, expressed concern over rising cases, saying the area was increasingly becoming a dumping ground for bodies.

The body has since been moved to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary, where it awaits formal identification by family members.

Police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue. Residents have called for increased security patrols in the area.

Nepal’s ex-PM arrested over fatal protest crackdown

By Peter John

Nepal’s former prime minister KP Sharma Oli has been taken to hospital following his arrest over his alleged involvement in a deadly crackdown on protests last year.

Oli was admitted to a clinic in Kathmandu as a part of routine police procedure soon after his arrest at his home early on Saturday morning, officials say.

More than 70 people were killed, many of them protesters shot by police, during an uprising in September – which was sparked by a social media ban but fuelled by anger over corruption and economic conditions.

Ex-home minister Ramesh Lekhak was also arrested on Saturday, after a panel appointed to investigate the unrest recommended the pair be prosecuted for criminal negligence.

Oli was admitted to hospital pending results from medical tests and given his age and medical history of two kidney transplants, the hospital’s information office told BBC Nepali.

The arrestscome a day after the nation’s new prime minister, 35-year-old rapper-turned-politician Balen Shah, was sworn in following an election triggered by the crisis.

“They were arrested this morning and the process will move forward according to the law,” Kathmandu Valley police spokesman Om Adhikari told newswire Agence France-Presse. Oli, 74, and Lekhak, 62, have not been charged.

Oli has previously rejected the findings of the commission, which also recommended the arrest of former police chief Chandra Kuber Khapung, telling the Annapurna Post they were “character assassination and hate politics”.

His lawyers told Reuters his detention was unwarranted at this point in the investigation.

“It is illegal and improper because there is no risk of him fleeing or avoiding questioning,” he said.

Supporters of Oli’s CPN-UML party have begun protests in Kathmandu after the party’s secretariat decided to launch nationwide demonstrations.

On Instagram, new Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who was a key figure in the protests, welcomed the arrests.

“No one is above the law… This is not revenge against anyone, just the beginning of justice,” he wrote.

At least 19 people – including a teenager in school uniform – were killed during the so-called Gen-Z protests on 8 September, when youth took to the streets over a government shutdown of social media sites.

Coming amid frustration over high unemployment, a stagnant economy, and corruption and nepotism in politics, the crackdown sparked broader rallies across the nation in which scores more died and parliament, police stations and shops were set on fire.

Families of 76 people who died have been calling for officials to be held accountable in the months since.

Oli resigned on 9 September, but re-contested the election which was held on 5 March.

Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party’s (RSP) won in a landslide, the first time in decades that a single party has garnered a majority in Nepal, which has an electoral format that makes it difficult for any one party to win outright.

Kioko’s Ultimatum to Governor Wavinya Raises Questions Over Kalonzo Led Wiper Party’s Accountability

Comedian and entrepreneur Sammy Kioko has issued a fresh ultimatum to the Machakos County government, demanding settlement of an alleged Ksh19 million debt and warning of protests if Governor Wavinya Ndeti fails to respond by Sunday.

Kioko claims the county owes him millions for uniforms supplied, stating that he has only received Ksh20,000, an amount he describes as negligible compared to the outstanding balance. He has warned that he and other contractors will camp at county offices starting Tuesday if no action is taken.

“We will spend the whole day there, and not only the day, we will also spend the night there… enough is enough,” he said.

The dispute, which dates back to 2024, has drawn public attention and reignited concerns over delayed payments to suppliers by county governments. Kioko has previously staged protests and documented repeated attempts to seek redress, accusing the county of ignoring his claims.

Machakos County officials have denied any direct contractual relationship with Kioko, maintaining that the tender was awarded to a different registered entity and citing procurement and delivery issues as factors in delayed payment.

However, beyond the contractual dispute, the standoff is now raising broader political questions, particularly within the Wiper Democratic Movement, to which Governor Wavinya belongs.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been a vocal figure in the opposition, frequently calling for accountability, good governance and protection of public interest. Yet, he has remained publicly silent on the ongoing allegations involving one of his party’s senior leaders.

The silence sparks debate on whether the opposition’s governance ideals are consistently applied within its own ranks. Critics may argue that failure to address such issues internally could undermine claims of reform and accountability at the national level.

The situation raises a larger question: if unresolved disputes and allegations of delayed payments persist without clear political accountability, does this reflect a broader governance challenge within opposition-aligned Wiper Party?

As Kenya edges closer to the 2027 general elections, such incidents are likely to shape public perception, not just of individual leaders, but of the governing philosophy they represent.

With the deadline fast approaching, attention is now on whether Governor Wavinya will respond to the ultimatum and whether her party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, will finally address the growing concerns over accountability and alleged debt indiscipline within his party.

Mudavadi’s ANC Condemns Police Over Disruption of Sifuna Led Linda Mwananchi Meeting at Ufungamano House

By Andrew Kariuki

Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi’s, Amani National Congress (ANC) has strongly condemned the police over what it termed as excessive and unjustifiable force used to block a political meeting at Ufungamano House in Nairobi.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party criticised security agencies for disrupting a gathering attended by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo and other leaders aligned to the Linda Mwananchi faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

ANC stated that police officers repeatedly attempted to block access to the venue and disrupt what it described as a lawful political meeting, terming the actions unnecessary and an abuse of state power.

The party argued that the move constituted a violation of Article 38 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to assemble, associate, and participate in political activities.

“Using police to deny citizens, including elected leaders, access to a lawful meeting is not law enforcement. It is political suppression,” the statement read.

The party further expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of state agencies being used to interfere in the internal affairs of political parties.

According to ANC, the deployment of police to disrupt opposition meetings undermines democratic principles and signals a shift toward authoritarian practices.

The party called on national leadership to respect political pluralism and uphold constitutional freedoms, warning that weakening political institutions for short-term gain could erode the country’s democratic foundations.

ANC also urged institutions such as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to safeguard democratic processes and ensure the protection of political rights.

Tiger Woods’ Rollover Crash Marks His Fourth Major Car Incident, Second DUI Arrest

JUPITER ISLAND, Fla.

Tiger Woods was arrested Friday following a rollover crash near his Florida home, marking the golfer’s fourth high-profile auto incident and his second DUI-related arrest.

Neither Woods nor the occupant of the other vehicle was injured, according to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.

Woods faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

The arrest adds to a history of driving incidents spanning more than two decades.

Senate Joint Committee Inspects FLLOCA Projects in Kwale County

The Senate Joint Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Finance, chaired by Sen. Mohamed Faki and Sen. Ali Roba respectively, conducted an oversight visit to Kwale County to assess projects funded under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLOCA) programme.

During the visit, the Committee inspected the water distribution project at Bofu Dam in Kasemeni Ward, where members expressed satisfaction with the progress made through the collaboration between project funders and the County Government of Kwale.

Speaking during the visit, Sen. Faki noted that the project demonstrates promising impact, stating that it offers hope to the local communities and urged stakeholders to ensure its timely completion to fully serve its intended purpose.

Sen. Ali Roba also commended the visible positive transformation brought about by the initiative, emphasizing the need for sustainability. He encouraged the County Government to prioritize expansion of existing successful projects to reach more beneficiaries, rather than initiating entirely new ones.

However, the Committee raised concern over the transfer of Ksh 28.5 million from the FLLOCA account to other purposes. The County Executive was directed to provide a detailed explanation, supported by evidence, within 14 days outlining the reasons for the reallocation and how the funds were utilized.

The lawmakers further visited the rehabilitation of Sagalato Water Pan in Kibandaongo, Kinango Ward, as well as the Mabogi Water Pan in Ndauni B Village, Ndavaya Ward.

The Committee is expected to proceed with a similar inspection in Kilifi County before compiling a comprehensive report to be tabled before the Senate.
