Ride-hailing company Bolt has hosted a road safety and vehicle maintenance workshop at its Driver Engagement Centre for female drivers.
The engagement was designed to provide practical training in road safety, flood management, and vehicle maintenance.
Speaking during the event, Lydia Mwaniki, a driving expert citing the World Health Organization (WHO), stated that road traffic accidents are the leading non-disease-related cause of death globally.
The aim of the training was to help women drivers become more confident, alert, and prepared, particularly during difficult driving conditions.
Bolt Hosts Defensive Driving and Flood Awareness Workshop
The primary focus of the workshop was defensive driving, with trainers encouraging drivers to always stay alert and anticipate potential dangers on the road.
According to Mwaniki, a driver is never right since any decision taken can cause an accident.
Drivers were taught to constantly scan ahead for hazards and avoid reacting at the last minute.
Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead was strongly emphasized. Drivers should keep at least a three‑second gap to allow enough time to stop safely if traffic suddenly slows down.
The distance should also be increased during rainy conditions with poor visibility.
Drivers were reminded to always check blind spots before changing lanes and to indicate early to avoid sudden movements. Drivers urged to be cautious around matatus and boda bodas, which often stop abruptly and make unpredictable turns.
Proper lane discipline and patience were identified as the primary means of reducing accidents and improving traffic flow.
Flood Awareness and Emergency Situations
The Nairobi region is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, which is causing flooding.
Drivers were warned about the dangers hidden in floodwaters, including potholes, debris, and damaged road surfaces that are not visible from the surface.
According to Joan Nyambura, an Auto Technician at Fourreal Inspections, shallow water can be dangerous, with as little as 15 centimeters of fast‑moving water capable of knocking a person off balance, while deeper water can easily stall vehicles or sweep them away.
During the rainy season, flooded roads should be avoided for the safety of the driver and passenger, as well as the maintain the vehicle.
Drivers were advised to avoid flooded roads where the depth is unknown, especially in underpasses and low‑lying areas.
The family of the late Nyeri Governor James Nderitu Gachagua has petitioned President William Ruto, seeking an independent investigation into what they describe as a scheme to disinherit them from his estate.
In a letter addressed to the President through the Attorney General, the family alleges that a close relative interfered with the succession process through intimidation, manipulation and fraudulent dealings, resulting in irregular transfer of assets and financial loss to the rightful beneficiaries.
“The avaricious conduct and persistent interference by a close relative… has caused untold distress and material loss to us, the rightful dependents of the deceased,” the family states in the letter dated March 23, 2026.
At the centre of the dispute is a purported will the family argues is invalid, noting that the document bears the inscription “Draft Last Will and Testament.”
“A ‘draft’ document cannot by any stretch of reason or law, constitute the final will and testament of the deceased,” the letter reads.
The family further questions the circumstances under which the will was allegedly executed, stating that at the time, the late Gachagua was critically ill and bedridden with metastatic pancreatic cancer.
“He was unable to see, let alone write or comprehend any legal document,” the letter states, adding that the document is “diametrically inconsistent with medical reality, witness account, and the physical condition” of the deceased.
They accuse the unnamed relative of leveraging political influence to defraud the estate, misappropriate funds meant for the family’s welfare and deny them access to properties forming part of their inheritance.
As part of their appeal, the family is seeking “an independent and impartial investigation into the forgery of a Will, irregular interference, fraudulent dealings and unlawful intermeddling” in the estate.
They are also calling for the return of assets they claim were irregularly transferred, including Olive Gardens and Vipingo Beach Resort, and protection from further intimidation and coercion.
The letter is signed by members of the immediate family including Margaret Nyokabi Nderitu, Susan Kirigo Nderitu, Mercy Wanjira Nderitu Early, Jason Kariuki Nderitu and Ken Gachagua Nderitu.
The development comes days after President Ruto called out his former Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, a brother to the late Nderitu Gachagua, accusing him of disinheriting his sibling.
Nderitu Gachagua, the first Governor of Nyeri County, died in a road accident. Gachagua denies the claims.
Similar allegations were raised during Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings, but he also dismissed them.
The family says it remains hopeful that the government will intervene to ensure justice, restore their dignity and bring closure to the long-running dispute.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has denounced Oburu Oginga as the Orange Democratic Movement party leader, stating that they recognise him only as an elder, not the party leader.
Speaking during the ‘People’s’ National Delegates Convention (NDC) of the Linda Mwananchi faction at Ufangamano House on Friday, the MP questioned what he termed the hurried installation of Oburu as party leader following the death of Raila Odinga, stating that members were pressured to endorse the decision.
He dismissed the move, saying it did not reflect the values Raila upheld.
“Is that the true spirit of ODM? Is that the true spirit of our leader, Raila Odinga?” Owino asked.
“Is that the spirit of the youth who fought to bring down oppression and raise the burden of freedom? Is that the true spirit of Gen Z?”
He added, “We will respect Oburu as our elder but not our leader.”
The meeting at Ufungamano House ran parallel to another ODM NDC convened at Jamhuri Grounds, where a rival faction led by Oburu gathered delegates to deliberate on party leadership and internal affairs.
Both sides insisted their meetings were legitimate, deepening divisions within the party.
Owino questioned the legality of the Jamhuri meeting, arguing that the process of convening the NDC was flawed.
“The NDC at Jamhuri is illegal,” he said.
“It is the Secretary General who is supposed to call for such a meeting, and that process was not followed.”
At Ufungamano, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders aligned to the faction defended their position, maintaining that their forum reflected the will of party members.
Owino used the platform to highlight broader concerns affecting Kenyans, linking them to what he described as the party’s founding ideals.
“We will continue to fight for Kenyans,” he said.
“A teacher graduates and stays for years without employment. Some will retire before getting jobs. Doctors’ salaries are delayed, and students graduate without opportunities.”
Embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has appeared to signal his exit from the powerful party position, declaring that he will not continue serving under what he termed as “mediocrity” following the leadership transition after Raila Odinga’s passing last year.
Speaking during a charged address to supporters at what they called the ‘People’s’ National Delegates Convention (NDC) at Ufungamano House on Friday, the Linda Mwananchi faction leader suggested that he was ready to step aside from the role he has held for years, taking a direct swipe at the new party leadership under Dr. Oburu Oginga.
“It has been the honour of my life to be the Secretary General of probably the greatest politician this country will ever see, Raila Amollo Odinga,” he declared.
“Sasa nataka mniangalie vizuri; yaani mnataka kuniambia naweza kuwa katibu mkuu wa ODM, katibu mkuu wa Raila Odinga, miaka nane, and then I become the SG of mediocrity? Oburu tafuta SG wako, mimi siwezi kuwa SG wa Oburu. I will not be the SG of mediocrity, after Raila Odinga, you characters don’t deserve me.”
The remarks, widely interpreted as a public resignation or at the very least a refusal to serve under the new regime, mark a significant escalation of recent internal tensions within ODM following Raila’s death.
Even as he took a defiant tone, Sifuna maintained that leadership positions are ultimately determined by the will of the people, dismissing fears that he could be politically weakened by losing the said office.
He further clarified that he does not consider himself entitled to the ODM Secretary General position indefinitely, noting that other capable leaders exist within the party.
He had earlier on, however, insisted that any attempts to replace him as was previously done must strictly follow the party’s constitutional procedures.
“Sifuna was not born to be the Secretary General of ODM forever.
Roy Hodgson’s idea of celebrating 50 years in management is not to sit back reflecting on a career of highs and lows with both clubs and countries – it is to return to the dugout at Bristol City.
The 78-year-old former England boss left his last job at Crystal Palace in February 2024, riding off into what everyone presumed would be the sunset of a career that began at Halmstad in Sweden in 1976.
And yet, in a move that proved once again that football’s capacity to surprise must not be under-estimated, Hodgson is back at another one of his former clubs 44 years after being sacked by them.
Instead of poring over his beloved books, as an avid reader of Milan Kundera, John Updike and Philip Roth, Hodgson is back in business
Hodgson replaces the sacked Gerhard Struber at Championship side Bristol City for the last seven games of the season – and even if it is only for that short period, it is still one of the most eyebrow-raising stories of the campaign.
Return of the old campaigners
Hodgson’s comeback makes him the latest in a series of the game’s elder statesmen who find it seemingly impossible to kick the high the drug of football offers them.
Martin O’Neill, at 74 but still as sharp and competitive as ever, is currently in his second spell of this season at former club Celtic, who he also managed from 2000-2005.
He is currently locked in the high stakes, high pressure, fight for the Scottish Premiership title alongside Hearts and Rangers after succeeding Brendan Rodgers earlier this season then, having left when Wilfried Nancy was appointed, returning once again when the Frenchman was sacked after only eight games.
Neil Warnock, at 77, also returned for a short spell in charge of his old club Torquay United, between the sacking of Paul Wootton and the appointment of Jimmy Ball.
And will be there be another old stager on the comeback trail?
Harry Redknapp, older than Hodgson at 79, has made it clear he is willing to return to Tottenham Hotspur – where he was sacked in 2012 – as a possible solution should they decide to dispense with the services of Igor Tudor.
That, at this stage, seems far-fetched – but so did the idea of Hodgson reappearing on the touchline, until Friday’s announcement by Bristol City.
How is Hodgson viewed?
Hodgson is a widely respected figure within football after a nomadic career that brought successes – but also failure in his two most high-profile posts, as England manager and before that at Liverpool.
Hodgson’s seven-month reign at Liverpool, where he was appointed in 2010 after taking Fulham to the Europa League final, was a nightmare as he arrived at the club in the middle of a financial crisis and ownership uncertainty. He was never accepted by Liverpool fans, especially as results were so poor, and was dismissed when they were 12th in the Premier League.
And he was left with little but embarrassment after four years in charge of England, which included the humiliation of failing to get out of the World Cup group stage in Brazil in 2014, then the exit to minnows Iceland in the last 16 at Euro 2016 in France.
And yet his career should not be judged through the prism of these failures.
Hodgson deserves, and gets, the grateful thanks of clubs such as Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace, having steered them away from trouble to stability.
He had an unfulfilling spell at Blackburn Rovers when he was appointed in 1997, but is still highly regarded in Scandinavia, where he won the Swedish title at Halmstad in 1976 and 1979, making him a legendary figure at the club.
After spells at Oddevold and Orebro he came to greater prominence at Malmo, leading them to five consecutive titles.
Hodgson continued his work in Switzerland with Neuchatel Xamax, doing well enough to be offered the national team post, subsequently leading them the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where they lost to Spain in the last 16.
He also led the Swiss to qualification for Euro 96 in England, his successes bringing him wider attention, taking the post at Inter Milan after qualification was secured.
The zenith of his time in Milan was taking Inter to the 1997 Uefa Cup final, which they surprisingly lost over two legs to Bundesliga side Schalke.
The breadth of his work explains the high regard in which he is held by his peers, and perhaps why he still feels he has something to offer.
Never go back – even after 44 years?
Hodgson’s return to Bristol City after more than four decades sees him join a club with high ambition but who are currently a lowly 16th in the Championship in a season which started with hopes of a play-off place at least.
The mood is currently one of anger among Bristol City’s big fanbase, so chief executive Charlie Boss will see the arrival of Hodgson as the chance to calm discontent with the measured figure of the former England manager at the helm.
Hodgson’s previous spell was blighted by a financial crisis, and this is another job that requires the ship to be steadied.
It has all the hallmarks of a holding operation between now and the end of the season, with the hope of getting results to offer hope for next term.
Bristol City are in the process of appointing a sporting director before bringing in a new head coach. They will expect the vast experience of Hodgson to ensure a smooth transition while improving the mood of supporters.

Edin Dzeko is proving that age is just a number after the 40-year-old played a key role as Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Wales in their World Cup qualifying play-offs semi-final.
The former Manchester City striker scored a late equaliser before his side won in the penalty shootout to set up a match with Italy next Tuesday.
He also showed he still has fire in the belly as he clashed with Wales manager Craig Bellamy – his former City team-mate – at one point in the match.
The win means Dzeko is just one victory away from joining an exclusive club of players who are 40 or over to have played at a World Cup.
In fact only one outfield player has ever managed it – Roger Milla for Cameroon at the 1994 USA World Cup.
Milla was 42 years and 35 days when he played Brazil, and then faced Russia four days later, when he also scored.
A World Cup for the veterans?

After years of World Cups without any outfield players aged 40 or over featuring in it, Dzeko could actually have some company this summer, if Bosnia-Herzegovina see off Italy next week
Croatia’s veteran midfielder Luka Modric is set to captain his country at the tournament, which will be his sixth World Cup.
Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, is also set to feature at his sixth World Cup.
But. while those two are World Cup regulars. qualification for the upcoming edition will end a long wait for Dzeko – who has not featured at the tournament in 12 years.
While a 40-plus outfield player at a World Cup is rare there have been six goalkeepers to have done it.
Kylian Mbappe moved to within one goal of equalling France’s all-time top goalscoring record as his side beat Brazil in a friendly at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, USA.
Mbappe was sent through on goal by Ousmane Dembele in the 32nd minute and dinked the ball over onrushing Brazil keeper Ederson.
It was Mbappe’s 56th goal on his 95th appearance for his country – only Olivier Giroud with 57 goals in 137 caps has scored more for the two-time world champions.
The 27-year-old was substituted for Marcus Thuram in the 66th minute having had two further half chances, dragging two shots wide in the first half.
The forward, who made his France debut at the age of 18 in 2017, has been recovering from a knee injury having last started for Real Madrid on 22 February.
On Wednesday he denied reports, external his injury had been misdiagnosed by a Real medical team member mistakenly examining his wrong knee.
France were reduced to 10 men in the second half when last man Dayot Upamecano fouled Brazil full-back Wesley just outside the area.
But, despite having one man less, Didier Deschamps’ France doubled their lead through Hugo Ekitike’s close-range chipped effort in the 65th minute.
Brazil, managed by former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, pulled one goal back 13 minutes later when centre-back Bremer turned in Luiz Henrique’s low cross.
Brentford forward Igor Thiago made his Brazil debut coming off the bench for Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha but his side were unable to fashion an equaliser in the closing stages.
Brazil were without their own all-time top scorer Neymar, who has not been included in Ancelotti’s squad due to fitness issues.
The teams were playing at Gillette Stadium, home of NFL team the New England Patriots and venue of France’s final World Cup group game against Norway this summer.

Argentina great Lionel Messi will have a stand named after him by his current club Inter Miami at their new stadium.
The 38-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever, signed for the MLS club in 2023 after a trophy-laden career in Europe with Barcelona and Paris St-Germain.
He has gone on to become the record goalscorer with 82 and record assist provider with 53 for the Florida club, who have taken the unusual step of honouring an active player in this fashion at their 26,700 capacity Nu Stadium.
Inter Miami said: “Traditionally, tributes look to the past. They are built from nostalgia. From memory. This one is different. This one is born from the present.
“From what is happening right now. From what you feel every time Leo steps on to the pitch.
“Recognising someone is not always about closing a chapter. Sometimes it is about realising you are witnessing something unique.”
Inter Miami are set to play their first match at the new stadium against Austin FC on Saturday, 4 April.
Last season Messi, who is an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, became the first player in MLS history to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards.
Messi’s arrival at the club co-owned by former England captain David Beckham has raised the profile of the league and Inter Miami’s status, as well as delivering success in the form of the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.
The Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal has granted the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) the go-ahead to revoke six broadcasting licences held by Standard Media Group PLC over unpaid arrears amounting to over Ksh48 million.
In a statement on Friday, March 27, CA said the ruling followed a prolonged dispute over unpaid licence fees and levies owed to the regulator.
“In a ruling delivered today, the tribunal dismissed an appeal by The Standard Media Group PLC, asserting that the impending revocation was lawful, valid, and in accordance with the Kenya Information and Communications Act (KICA),” the statement read.
According to CA, the decision further highlighted the broadcaster’s long-standing failure to meet its financial obligations despite multiple notices and opportunities to comply.
“The tribunal cited the media group’s failure to pay outstanding annual licence fees and the Universal Service Fund Levy over several years, despite subsequent notices of revocation by the Authority, as stipulated under the licensing terms and conditions,” the statement added.
The six affected licences include Vybez Radio, Berur FM, Radio Maisha, Spice FM, KTN Burudani, and KTN News.
The authority insisted that compliance with licence conditions is mandatory and repeatedly enforced.
“The licences require annual remittance of fees and levies, conditions which the Standard Media Group failed to meet despite several extensions and concessions by the Authority,” the statement further read.
According to the CA, enforcement actions began after the broadcaster failed to act within a formal notice period issued in late 2023.
“On September 24th, 2024, noting the non-clearance of the outstanding Regulatory fees and the expiry of the Notices of Contravention, The Authority issued Notices of Revocation to all Standard Group PLC stations,” the statement continued.
The regulator also revealed that it had previously engaged the media house in multiple meetings in an attempt to resolve the matter.
“The CA had previously indulged Standard Group in meetings held on June 14th, 2023, December 4th, 2023, and February 9th ,2024 on non-payment of regulatory fees owed to the Authority,” the statement explained.
Following the expiry of the revocation notices, the authority moved to formalize the process through official publication.
“On April 9th, 2025, CA informed Standard Group that following lapse of the revocation notices which had expired on March 24th, 2025, the Authority is progressing to publish a notification on the revocation of all broadcast licences issued to Standard Group in the Kenya Gazette,” the statement noted.
According to CA, the outstanding amount currently stands at Ksh48,874,524.10, comprising licence fees of Ksh13,880,334.37 and a Universal Service Fund levy of Ksh34,994,189.73.
The Authority on Thursday conducted an outreach program in Narok County aimed at enhancing awareness of its mandate and strengthening collaboration with security and administrative leadership.
During the visit, IPOA paid courtesy calls to the County Commander, Mr. Alex Lobolia, and the County Commissioner, Mr. Ruben Lotiatia, where discussions focused on IPOA’s oversight role and the importance of institutional cooperation in promoting accountability in policing.
The IPOA team, led by the Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku and Commissioner Bonface Samati accompanied by RC Sarah Mweah, also engaged commanders from various sub-county offices in a sensitisation forum. The session highlighted IPOA’s mandate, emphasised its role in safeguarding both public interest and police welfare, and underscored the importance of compliance with oversight mechanisms.
Further discussions explored the critical role of the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) in supporting effective policing and coordination at the grassroots level.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships that promote transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery within the National Police Service.
