Keep off our universities, MP Wandayi Warns Kenya Kwanza

The Kenyan Kwanza government, led by President William Ruto, is now under pressure from the opposition to withdraw their plans of privatizing public universities

Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi said in a statement on Friday that it was a plot by some government officials to seize the massive land and infrastructure owned by the universities.

“Our public universities have enormous resources, particularly in terms of land and infrastructure. Someone may be eyeing these resources under the guise of resolving this institution’s financial problems “He stated.

His remarks came after Investments, Trade, and Industry CS Moses Kuria said there was a need to privatize some public universities in the country.

According to Kuria, this would help ease the burden that has seen these institutions get into debt.

He said he was in talks with investors to partner with universities and make them better places.

Wandayi said the transactional approach being pushed by Kuria on behalf of his bosses has no place in education

He added that there are tested ways through which the government can help public universities.

KWS Criticized For Vasectomy on Lions

A three-year-old lion is currently being nurtured and rehabilitated at the Stedmark underwent a vasectomy procedure at the KWS Veterinary Laboratory in an effort to control breeding at the captive facility.

One of the key activities undertaken by the Service through the Veterinary, Captive & Capture Services department in collaboration with the species programs is the rescue of animals in distress, orphans, and injured wild animals.

The animals are nurtured & rehabilitated in captive facilities. However, noting that when wild animals are hand-reared, they lose their natural instincts and if released back into the wild, they are vulnerable. The cat family ends up being problem animals as they look for easier prey.

As such, the wild animals kept in captive facilities are given the best conditions and utilized as exhibits to enhance local tourism, conservation education, and awareness for schools and the general public. Breeding is not permissible in captive facilities.

Appropriate management interventions such as vasectomy are undertaken using the recommended best practice to ensure animal welfare is enhanced.

The main threats to lion conservation include human-wildlife conflict leading to injury and retaliatory killing, increased human settlement and infrastructure development in wildlife habitats leading to increased interaction between people and wildlife, habitat loss, and fragmentation.

declining wildlife populations which affect predator-prey dynamics, impacts of climate change occasioned by frequent and prolonged drought, diseases, and lack of clear land use plans leading to poor conservation management strategies.

The wetland supports an estimated population of 94 species of resident and migratory birds such as Cattle Egret, Sacred Ibis, Hadada Ibis, Kingfisher, Hammer kop, Jackson’s widow, Grey crown cranes (endangered), and African marsh harrier as well as approximately 68 plant species and 26 species of macroinvertebrates.

It provides a range of critical ecosystem services and products that are indispensable to human survival, health, and welfare.

The area around the wetland has a fast-growing population as a result of the urban influence of nearby Kikuyutown that is characterized by high in-migration thus pausing numerous threats and challenges to the wetland.
